| java question OK Steph (hrdlfe) and I are both having this problem. When we go to Pogo to play a game, we get a blue screen. It comes up after the java console window opens. The error message is a VxD error. I have updated to IE6, hoping that would update some of my java settings. No bueno. I thought it might be because my system is so tiny. I'm running a celeron 433 with only 64 mb ram (laptop.) But Steph is getting the error on her 1.4gb system. I'm running Win98 SR2. I'm not sure what Steph is running. HELLLLLPPPPP! I can't play slots!!!!!! LMAO. __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

| yep says error in VxD...and it's not just on my puter but hubby's puter too!!! Mine is an hp 800 mhz Windows ME hubby's 1.4 Ghz Windows XP now so far the only solution i've been able to come up with is that it's our firewall with our cable modem, but i don't think that's it... another thing i was thinking is that pogo has this new thing where it checks for "auto-play" so ppl can't cheat, but i don't have an auto play thing, i dunno how to even get one, so i'm thinking maybe it's reading my cable connection as an auto play??? other than that i am completely lost, i've tried changing security in internet options cleaned cookies/temp. int. files a MILLION times, defragged etc etc etc and I HAVE been able to get in the slots before, it just won't let me in 8 times outta 10.... spent 3 hours on microsoft AND hp website today trying to figure out what the heck VxD even IS.... help help before me and cashhound go bald from tearin our hair out!!!! hubby thinks also that it may be because we only have standard factory issue sound and video cards in both the puters?? HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP!! thanks ![]() __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

| You might want to try updating your java console - that's not included in IE because Sun (who makes Java) basically told Microsoft they're not allowed to change Java, so Microsoft responded by refusing to release Java with Internet Explorer. You should be able to find the newest version of java on [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] See if that helps... if not, can you get me the full error number and I'll see what else I can find out. -Dyllan __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. Thanks Dyllan. I wondered why I couldn't find anything about Java updates on the microsoft site...duh. Got it downloaded and installed..I think...lol. I'll let you know if I'm still having problems. Steph...I didn't think about the broadband access pinging firewall thing. But, Billy isn't having any problems with his, and he and I are on the same network. Hmmm. His is an athlon 1.2 gb with Win ME. Maybe it's cause he isn't staying on as long as I do...lmao.

| Here's the error message I get most times............ The following error has occurred: The Applet Encountered a Programming Error (Cripes!) Explanation: This error usually indicates that either the applet has been corrupted in your cache, there's a bug in your browser or there's a bug in our applet. How to Fix the Problem: The most common cause of this error occurs when your copy of the applet is corrupted. So the first thing you should do is clear your browser's cache and see if this fixes the problem. Pull down the Tools menu and choose "Internet Options" Click on the General tab. Click on the Delete Files button in the "Temporary Internet Files" section and then click OK when the dialog box appears. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box. Exit and relaunch Internet Explorer. You might also need to turn off your Java JIT compiler. Here's how to do that: Pull down the Tools menu and choose "Internet Options" Click on the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the "Java VM" subhead and make sure "Java JIT compiler enabled" is unchecked. Click the OK button. After clearing your cache, you need to quit and restart your browser. If you don't quit the browser, your cache will not be completely cleared out. If this doesn't seem to solve your problem, try rebooting your computer. If this does not fix the problem, you may have a caching proxy server between you and our web server. To see if this is the case, check the proxy setting for your browser. If there is a proxy server set, try turning it off. Then clear your cache again as described above, and quit and restart your browser to see if it fixes the problem. If this does not fix the problem, your browser may not be installed properly. Try re-installing your browser. If all of these solutions still don't fix your problem, then you have probably encountered a bug in our applet or in the browser you are using. Earlier browser versions (Netscape 3.x and 4.0x as well as Internet Explorer 3.x) may have Java-related bugs in them that are causing the problem. There is a good chance that upgrading your browser will fix the error. If that does not solve the issue, then it is probably a bug in our applet. One way or another, please Submit a Bug, because it will help our engineers to keep track of all of the issues our customers are facing. If the bug is in our applet, we will fix it promptly! __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] |

| You guys are making me realize that no matter how much one learns in this field, there's always WAY more to know. I'm using IE 6, and just did a search of my system. I can't find anything called Contenet IE 5, or anything similar to that. Of course, I'm running Windows 2000. Do you have IE 6 Service Pack 1, or IE 6 without the Service Pack. Service Pack 1 has a few bugs in it, though I haven't heard of anything like this. Warning to those of you who might want to download Service Pack 1 for IE 6 - don't. Some people have had no problems with it, while others have had quite serious ones. I'm sure Microsoft is working for a patch on it, but until that patch comes out it's not a good idea to upgrade. Anyway, it should be safe to delete the folder... though I can't guarantee it won't be recreated. You said it slows your system down - are you low on hard drive space? Extra data on your hard drive should only have a negligable effect on performance unless you are either nearly out of (or completely out of) space on the hard drive or your drive is extremely fragmented. If you're low on space, I'd suggest either installing a second drive or finding some things to delete ( personal plug - I have a hard drive for auction on [Only registered and activated users can see links. Check Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools. If not, you should be able to find a shareware or freeware defragmentation utility at [Only registered and activated users can see links. | If the service pack has to be installed separately, then I don't have it. I really wish I hadn't updated. I was having trouble with Outlook Express one day, and called Comcast, and the tech there told me to change to IE 6 to see if that would help. He stayed on the phone and walked me thru it, and I didn't write down any of the steps, so I don't remember exactly what I did, but I know I didn't delete IE 5, so I thought maybe we skipped something that caused this problem. Another Comcast tech a few weeks later took a guess that Windows had saved a bunch of files to put back in case I went back to IE 5 one day. But why would it save Temporary Files? Those aren't necessary for anything! I had so many of these files (average of about 12,000 in each folder, with one having 16,000), that it was affecting my ability to download anything. Couldn't even run some of the tests on pcpitstop. So I posted to the boards there, and found out about the IE 6 glitch from one of the techs there. But they could only tell me how to find the Content IE 5 ones, not how to get them to dump automatically from now on. At first I didn't know the folders would fill up again. I build up about 20,000 new temp files every week, and those radio commercials are very large. I have 416 RAM memory and over 1/2 of my hard drive is empty, and I defrag every week, so my only problem is these temp files. By the way, I bought a second hard drive from you this Summer to use for backups, and haven't put it in yet because I was dealing with this other problem, plus needed to put in a DVD Rom drive first, and took an internet course on scanning, etc. It's always something. And I'm scared because I'm not sure where to hold the drive so I don't touch the circuit board (or whatever it's called), while I screw it into the spot above the original drive. There is no metal piece (bay?) to rest it on while I attach it. But I decided to finally attempt the install this afternoon. Any recommendations on software to do automatic backups each week, or is the Windows program good enough? | I had forgotten who I sold that drive to. As far as backup software, for what you have in mind the windows software should be fine. The only backup software I'm really familiar enough with to recommend is designed for backup to tape drives, primarily for systems with a lot more to backup (or backups of multiple systems over a network or the internet). But for backing up to a second drive, all you really need to do is copy the files. As for the service pack, if you downloaded IE 6 from Microsoft's site after the pack came out, it was probably included in the download. If you open up IE and click on Help -> About Internet Explorer it should tell you what version you have... it may or may not say Service Pack 1 if you have it installed. I don't have Service Pack 1 and I'm running version 6.0.2600.0000 -Dyllan __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Then I'd say you probably don't have the service pack. Have you tried going into Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add / Remove Programs and seeing if IE 5 was still listed. If it is, you could just uninstall it from there. (this is why it's called troubleshooting... you just keep taking shots at it until you get it fixed) -Dyllan __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links.
