| I've been away from DOD for a while, so this forum is a very pleasant surprise! I have a few cat questions for you. I have a 5 month old kitty (Annie) whom I adopted last month from someone whose DH didn't like cats. This is the first indoor cat I've ever had, so I've got a lot to learn...1. After my kitty Annie uses her litter box, many times she won't cover her mess up. She starts digging in front of her like she's going to cover it, but it's like she gets distracted and so busy digging that she forgets to finish the job! And she'll turn around and look at it, so she knows it's still there... Any suggestions on how to fix this? Her messes are very stinky when not buried, and I'm not always there to cover it for her (using the pooper scooper)!2. Any suggestions for trimming a cat's nails? Annie varies between active and playful to curling up and cuddling, so finding a calm time with her isn't too hard. But would I be able to keep her from scratching once she realizes what I'm doing?? ![]()

| Well, when I got her, her former owner gave me what she had left in cat litter, and I believe that was either Fresh Step Crystals or maybe Tidy Cat Crystals. When I mentioned the smell to a fellow cat owner at work who has multiple cats, he suggested one that is scoopable and has a cedar scent (can't remember the name, but it comes in a blue box). That's helped a little, but not much! I may try the hooded cat box idea though... I've never seen the filters before-- are they sold along side the boxes at places like Wal-Mart?Are finicky as cats usually are about being put somewhere they don't want to be (ie a box or bag), I'm amazed that your cat allowed you to wrap it in a towel! I do pet her legs and feet when she's in a cuddling mood, so maybe that will help...

| Also remember what she eats will determine how bad it smells. When I switched to Science Diet there was a huge difference. It was much better and the food was recommended by the vet. I now have a cat that will only eat Whiskas (this is one cat out of four) and it stinks so bad. If she was younger I would switch. __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] |

Mayfly is right about the towel. It is easy to keep from getting scratched if you wrap three legs tightly with a towel while you clip the fourth paws nails. Some cats are just have really bad aim when it comes to coverng up their messes. My cat is like that. She will go, then turn around to cover the mess but she misses every time. The hooded litter boxes do help in controling odors. If you want to go a step farther, you could get an automatic litter box (called the Litter Maid). Each time you cat goes, it will automatically scoop out the clumps and put them in a plastic box. Once the box gets full, you can either throw it away or clean it out and reuse it. You can get them at pet supply stores and I have seen them a few times at Target. They run about $90 but you don't have do any of the scooping anymore. They only work regular clumping litter. It is true that he higher quality pet food will produce different smelling poops. If you don't want to spend a lot on the super premium foods like Iams or Science Diet, you might want to try Purina One. I have found that it is comparable to the higher priced foods abd is about $4.50 for a three pound bag. |

I had bid on/won a ton of Purina One coupons @ eBay (each one good for a free 8 lb bag). STILL using the coupons, won the auction for $40 in the end, not at all bad considering I saved $120+ in the end ![]() Can't seem to find the 8# bags around here so I end up getting two 4# instead which I actually prefer because Iit fits perfectly in the Rubbermaid container I store it in (cereal container) ![]() Naomi ![]() __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Shih Tzu Ears and bad smell I have a full blood shih tzu. He has bad ear infections and he stinks, no matter what we do this dog smells like a corn chip! The vet wants to do allergy testing that is very expensive. He eats a lamb and rice based dog food. Anyone ever hear of this? Any ideas? | dog ear problems We try to control dog ear problems in furfamily with Vet Solutions ear cleaning solution and an allergy-free diet. When that does not work, we treat with meds, as most of the dogs have ears that hang down we have had trouble with yeasts. We have also had trouble with hematomas of ears from head shake do to allergies. We have used a warm not hot potato wrapped in a damp cloth like what you use on kids to make ears feel better or to distract their attention while cleaning the other ear. |

| Hey Cujo I too used to work at an animal hosp for 6 yrs I love this thread I think its great! Alot of vets won't say cause they want you to spend money but one that I worked for made his own it was just a plain mixture of Peroxide and alcohol and clean ears twice a day __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | There are lots of things that work that are home remedies. The only problem with alcohol in the ears is that if there are sores in the ears (sometimes in too deep to see) it will be painful for your pet. Hydrogen Peroxide can be used for many things with pets. There are lots of OTC meds that can be used too. But in different doses. Flour is cheaper and safer than quick-stop if you cut your pets nails too short. One thing I will not skimp on is flea control. the cheap stuff is highly toxic to pets. Frontline is my 1st choice followed by advantage. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Advantage/ Revolution For 10 yrs, we had 10 cats + 2 Mastiff/Rott mixes. Mack the Knife & Wild Thing died last yr. Now we're all cats. For yrs we fought fleas, w/pennies, determination, and little else. Our old Louisiana vet, told us to buy Advantage in the largest DOG size and gave us a formula to divide it between our cats. We get$300mo in flea treatment-for $30. Many name brand treatments have different formulas for dogs & cats,--dont try this with them -it may kill your cat. Advantage, I know from experience works safely, if applied in the correct amount. I know my cats dosage by heart-but forgot the original formula. It was lbs to cc's. This has been one of the best and most welcome tips we have ever had. I will search for my old vets # and post the exact formula if I get it. Maybe someone here already knows and can post it right away? Also I want to learn if this can be done with Revolution- dogs and cats have the same active ingredient-I need to know if there is any difference between dog and cat formulas beside the amount of dosage. I'll ask the vet-and keep scanning these posts to see if anyone else knows. |

She suggests this b/c vinegar is a drying agent like the alcohol but it does not have the side affect of burning the skin in the ear. |

| Hello there, I'm glad I found a place I could ask a couple of questions. I have a nine week old Basset Hound puppy (Reilly). This is another ear question. Reilly doesn't have an infection, however his ears SMELL! I clean them about twice a week and they still smell. I'm careful to be sure that I clean the whole ear inside and out. I've read and read about Basset ear care and I've applied what I've learned. It's just not keeping that smell away. The mixture of white vinegar and water helps for a couple of days then the smell is back again. I can't really afford expensive cleaners ect. So does anyone here know of anything I could either make myself or purchase that wouldn't cost too terribly much? Thanks in advance.............. |
