Governor Kills Statewide Anti-Smoking Program

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a former tobacco industry lobbyist, won a long battle in court to withdraw all funding for Mississippi's highly successful anti-smoking program, and last week the last dollar ran out.

"This is truly a case of one man, a longtime tobacco industry lobbyist, using his power to destroy a program that was reducing tobacco use among Mississippi's kids," said Matthew Myers, President of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a national nonprofit organization.

In a report to be issued Wednesday, the group documents what it calls Barbour's "relentless attack" on what it said was the nation's most successful anti-smoking program

Hi,
Not to be disrespectful of your views, but I think the whole anti-smoking thing is ludicrous. How about anti-drinking alcoholic beverages for kids? Seems like people just aren't putting much into those thoughts, and drunken drivers are among the nations leading killers.
Since there is a legal age for both, why only focus on smoking? Why not drinking too? There are more commercials for different types of beer on TV than I even knew existed, plus the other ones, the harder alcohols.
Since we already have terrible air pollution and Dr's or many have openly said that it's the air pollution more than anything else and that smoking is "adding" to the problem, but the air quality is something that we cannot do anything about, while smoking is... obviously, it's not the whole problem.

To have all these programs to limit a persons right to choose, I think (I am not talking about children, the anti-smoking campaign is for all ages), that it's limiting our rights. That, I'll always object to.
