| Newsweek may have been right after all, and other embarrassments...
According to government records, it turns out interrogators at Gitmo might have flushed a Koran or two down the toilet after all. And at a press conference Monday, Scott McClellan, with Afghan President Karzai present in the room, retreated on earlier claims that Newsweek's retracted story on Koran abuse cost lives in Afghanistan. We should also note on Monday, White House interns had to fill the press seats at Bush-Karzai news conference, because there was a real lack of “press.” Said one reporter, "Since we can't ask questions, why schlep over there?" So, what we saw on television were all these fresh young faces, pretty blonde girls in plaid skirts, and guys in blue blazers and sneakers, nodding their approval as the president spoke. Karzai, standing next to the President, looked like he was there for a college commencement address. Not a good visual for a visiting dignitary. In anther “bad visual” this week, in a confrontation with a little old lady, Scott McClellan was beat up to a point where he could no longer defend himself over his distortion of the truth earlier. Is the administration losing all credibility before our eyes? |

This reminds me of controlled Visits during the 2004 Elections "A member of the press corps we spoke to yesterday equated reporters at such staged White House functions with "props." He explained that because the president only takes four questions at each press availability -- two from U.S. wire service reporters and two from foreign scribes -- many in the press corps don't bother to show up."
