Re: New Pope Should Push for Change

I totally think that Priests should marry. You would get more priests, there would probably be less sexual abuse of children by priests . . .

My mom's church had a super nice priest. He made you want to listen to his sermons, but he didn't last. He ended up leaving the priesthood and got married. it's unnatural to expect a man to remain celebate. He should be able to have a family like everyone else.

How can a priest councel you on marriage when they don't have the first clue what it means? My pastor is such a "normal" guy. Just a couple months ago his whole family was there while he baptized his grandson.

I see one of two things happening - either changes are going to be made, or the Catholic Church is going to fall apart.

Re: New Pope Should Push for Change

I think they should be allowed to marry as well. Actually, our one Catholic church here in town has a married priest with children. I don't remember which faith he came from, but apparently there is one that the Catholic church now permits them to come over and remain married (and have children).

This new priest (new to our church) has caused quite a bit of controversy.. not because of him being married.. but because of other things.

Re: New Pope Should Push for Change

I forgot to add.. if it's ok for him to now be a Catholic priest and be married, then isn't it unfair that his brothers in the church can't do the same?

How about a pope that allows birth control?! And with the growth of Catholicism in Africa, I would hope the new pope would allow the use of condoms to stop the spread of AIDS!

A priest isn't suppose to do marriage counseling. Priests do spiritual counseling so if a couple needs marriage counseling the priest will tell the couple they need a marriage counselor.

Married men can be pedophiles so being married does not make one free of that mental illness.

More young people agree with the pope's teaching on issues than the older generation so they may be very satisfied on keeping things as they are.

I totally agree. The thing that always bugged me is there is absolutely no biblical basis for not allowing them to marry. In fact the opposite, MARRIAGE, is completely biblical!! I guess I've never understood what's so BAD about letting them get married. My dad is a married pastor and he is no less spiritual than a priest who remains celibate and performs mass multiple times each week.

Chatter box Re: New Pope Should Push for Change

I'd hate to be married to a priest. First of all they take a vow of poverty. Even the pope died owning nothing. Second they are married to the church with their time schedule. They are gone all the time working for the people of the parish. And then of course there is the confessional. You know as a wife I have to know everything my hubby talks about. I would expect him to tell me what he heard in the confessional. Oh he would say he couldn't under fear of going to **** if he reavealed anything he heard but I would try to get it out of him even if it was in his sleep. LOL

Can you provide a poll or link/url which supports this?

TIA

Secular clergy (those who are not in a religious order) do not take a vow of poverty. Neither do Jesuits, I think.
