Unity?

I have been hearing so much talk lately about unity and our country coming to together and "fixing the divided nation." Don't get me wrong, I truly believe that we should strive but peace. But realistically, how can we ever become a unified country? People more than ever, have such drastically different viewpoints. Nobody will ever see eye to eye on economic, social, moral, ethical issues...and WHY is it so important that we be unified?

As much as people say we need to be tolerant and open-minded...let's be honest, I think the MAJORITY of people want THEIR views and THEIR ideas to be mainstream. Advocates of gay marriage want THEIR idea that there is nothing wrong with gay marriage to be mainstream; they want it to be backed up by the government. Advocates of traditional marriage want THEIR idea that marriage is stricle between a man and woman to remain mainstream; and they want to make sure the government continues

And I'll be honest...all this talk of unity and open-mindedness and tolerance and kum-ba-yah reminds of The Left Behind Books. Of course I don't believe the Left Behind Books 100%, but all this unity talk sounds more and more like Biblical End Times. Now I'm saying things like racial equality are bad! Obviously that is NOT a bad thing. But I am referring more to ideas and morals.

One last comment, what does being open-minded mean? Does that mean I simply recognize that people have the right to believe that gay marriage is acceptable? Or does it mean that I should reject MY moral beliefs and accept that gay marriage is ok? I think that too oftens that what people want me to do...

Anyways they are just some random ramblings I have been thinking about. Feel free to comment, agree/disagree, add you thougsh, whatnot?

Lots of stuff to think about in your post...
I agree with a bunch of it, and I have been bugged by everyone saying Bush DIVIDED our country. If HE did it, then why was the 2000 vote the most divisive in history? That tells me Clinton wasn't the great unifier himself.

Re: Unity?

I'll tell you why "they" are saying it.I think "they" in my sentece are people that voted for both Gore and Kerry and are now sore losers. They got who they wanted in 1992 and 1996 while we were voting for Bush Senior and Bob Dole, so because they had won two times in a row previously they weren't use to losing. When we lost those two elections we weren't grumbling about Clinton dividing the country. Clinton caused his big uproar during his presidency with his own lies on the stand. They didn't understand why Clinton's moral values would matter to us, but we can see through the voting this year that morals do matter very much to us.

President Bush won with more votes, and more majority then Clinton ever did in either of his elections. But there were no complaints then that Clinton had divided the country despite his low popular vote percentage. I think that everyone should buck up and pull together, like we have had to when Clinton was at the helm, like we all have to when the person we don't want is at the helm. It happens to us all, we all get a president that we don't want at one point or another.

Re: Unity?

Here is what the liberals mean when they say they want the President to work with them. They mean that they want him to do things THEIR way. To that I say, tough luck. The President and the Republicans are completely and totally in charge. He should move forward with his platform full steam ahead. If nothing else, this election changed the face of the nation for an entire generation. He is going to appoint 2-3 supreme court justices and hopefully nominate people that will bring common sense back to the highest court in the land.

Bush's mandate amounts to little more than the fact that a slight majority of votes see him as better than someone he convinced them was unfit. His insistence that sweeping policy change was the message of the voters portends little hope for the prospects of unity and bipartisanship.

Re: Unity?

It's a moot point. Bush is going to do what he said he was going to do and that's that. Second terms rock because the President doesn't have to worry about another term. Only time will tell if his policies will be good or bad for America and the world.

It's already beginning. We are moving towards Fallujah and telling citizens to leave the area. We need to flatten it like a pancake and move on...

Re: Unity?

We need to go back to the old-style filibuster too, so that we can eventually pass some legislation. We need to make the legislators stay up 24-7 if they want to try to block something. And we need some toughness when it comes to holding the line on important issues.
We need Supreme Court judges with moral values. I really hope Bush gets to replace several during this term. Very big.

Rambling- but I am wondering if one of the reasons Bush won is the young men and women who voted for the first time this election, like my youngest son. He is solid Republican right now. 18 years old and a Freshman in college. But my oldest went to the same school and came out a pro-life Democrat. Very unusual. But UNC Chapel Hill is the school and you cannot find a Republican professor there. They eventually brain-wash most of the kids. (When you only hear one viewpoint for 4 years it happens.)

They have been told to leave (the men, women and children, including the women carrying unborn children) and they are doing so.

Re: Unity?

Yes. Very sad for them. But they will be alive at least. We need to do this to clean out the terrorists which have taken over the town.

Re: Unity?

I would like to see the Pubs on Capitol Hill seek to change that 60 minimum vote requirement in order for something to be heard on the floor. It is because of this rule that the Dems can bully their way to keeping Bush's choices for SC and other judicial seats off the slate to be voted on. They are afraid to change it though, I would imagine because they figure that they will be the minority one day and don't want to miss the chance to do the same thing to a Dem majority. Such pin-headed thinking, IMHO.

The citizens have been given fair warning. I don't remember terrorists giving us warning as our women and children died in the World Trade Center.

You obviously don't understand the first thing about war.
