John Kerry on Thursday accused President Bush of slowing scientific advancement after earning a special endorsement from the widow of actor Christopher Reeve, a proponent of the embryonic stem cell research on which the president has placed limits. "The American people deserve a president who understands that when America invests in science and technology, we can build a stronger economy and create jobs for the 21st century," Kerry said during a campaign rally. "But George Bush has literally ... turned his back on the spirit of exploration and discovery." Reeve's widow, Dana, said her family has been grieving privately since her husband died Oct. 10. "My inclination would be to remain private for a good long while," she said. "But I came here today in support of John Kerry because this is so important. This is what Chris wanted."

Arnold Schwarzenegger put himself at odds with President Bush over stem cell research Monday by endorsing a ballot measure that would use state bonds to promote that line of scientific inquiry, and he bucked leaders of his own party in California by embracing an initiative to open up primary elections. "I'm very much interested in stem cell research. I support it 100 percent,'' the governor said. "... I hope that it will win, so that eventually, 10 years from now, people will be saved from those terrible illnesses.''

| Re: Christopher Reeve's Widow Endorses Kerry It is really misleading to imply that just because Bush does not advocate public funding for stem cell research for new lines (he has okayed public funding for existing lines) that somehow that is going to bring about a grinding halt to stem cell research. People should get over the habit of thinking that taxpayer money is supposed to fund everything.

| Re: Christopher Reeve's Widow Endorses Kerry This only matters to those already in support of stem cell research. I really don't care who supports who, I've made up my own mind. Also, I think it is incredibly selfish to want to take the life of someone else just to possibly save your own. I also think it is a disgrace to use Christopher Reeve's death to further a political agenda. |
