personally I don't think there is such a thing. I think that anyone who is conservative would say moderate is liberal.

Would you believe me if I said I was moderate? What is the definition of moderate? Probably exactly the opposite of conservative.

And I didn't mean to be rabid, sorry if it came across that way. I honestly thought you didn't vote.

Well you know as well as I do that SOME people can't ever just do a simple thing like voting without giving everyone their two cents. Sometimes it would be nice if people would just keep it in the bank.

I agree..the libertarian philosophy is distinct from either liberal or conservative. On economic issues, they would be called "conservative", but on many social issues they would be called "liberal" under standard political terms...other than a strong, vigorous national defense, they usually believe in little government interference in other activities..so on most issues I would agree with them (although I do believe the environment should be protected by the government).
When the gays in the military controversy erupted in the 90s, Barry Goldwater said "I don't care if someone IS straight, as long as they can shoot straight." Rush idiotically said what happened to Goldwater..the answer was, Goldwater didn't change at ALL...he represented a distinct strain of Mountain West libertarianism which Reagan also carried to a large extent..what had "changed" was the GOP, which went from a "get the government off my back" party, to the "we also believe in big daddy government controlling your life like the Democrats, but we'll manage it better" party.
Trying to hunt down gays who are not flaunting it and kick them out of the military is the Southern, fundamentalist GOP...Goldwater reflected the traditional "mind your own business" fiscal/defense hawk/socially moderate or liberal GOP.
Another example is so-called "faith-based initiatives". Although Bush is 100% right that religious outreach programs do far better than government bueracracies to help people in need, it is still government running charity. A hardcore libertarian would argue that shifting from the government agency to semi-private faith based approaches is only a "first step" in dismantling the ineffective welfare state..same for school vouchers, it is a small baby step towards a free market in schools..granted, the GOP at least pays lip service to these baby steps which the Dems attack, but no major party candidate will openly question the BASIC PREMISE that government should be running all these things..the only thing being debated is degrees of government control or management approaches
