Bush, Kerry skirmish over nuclear waste

Anyone know if Kerry has a alternative? Or is he going to play both sides of the fence on this?

And is Bush flip-flopping?

Bush approved the site after winning the presidency, even though many scientific studies remained unfinished. "Science and not politics determined his decision whether to ship waste to Yucca Mountain."

Yucca Mountan won't happen during a Kerry presidency. He'll probably push for beefing up the sites where the spent rods are currently stored.

Re: Bush, Kerry skirmish over nuclear waste

So the waste is going to accumulate at countless sites? So if Yucca is out..then I bet we don't hear a alternative until after the elections or not at all.

Is it safer to keep at countless sites or is safer to transport the waste to one central location?
Should each state have to deal with the waste that each produces or should one state be the national dumping grouds. I wonder if we can work out a deal with Mexico to store the waste

Re: Bush, Kerry skirmish over nuclear waste

It's nuclear material. The bottom-line is that it ain't safe.

The plan of Yucca Mountain seems to be to guarantee the safety of this waste for the next 10,000 years, till the radioactivity wears off and there's no way for it to contaminate groundwater, soil, and such. Nevada's not so concerned with 10,000 years, as much as the next 200 or so, and mainly the next fifty.

This is a Reagan era issue. That means we've already wasted almost two decades with people offering unacceptable answers. Bush's plan doesn't call for construction to begin until 2010. Plenty of time to stall some more.

It's just ONGOING... Kerry's not going to provide an answer. He's just going to say NO to Yucca Mountain as the one site for all of it.

Better, IMO, that every state bury their garbage in their own backyard. That'll teach us not to generate so much gargage, or to at least do a better job of burying it.

Sorry. Rapid-fire post from me. It's just that Los Angeles contracted out for a subway system (in and of itself a STUPID IDEA) and then found out the concrete walls were half as thick as agreed upon. On a state-by-state or national level, contractors will occasionally cut corners, even with radioactive waste. I don't think the people of Nevada should be the only ones to pay the price for that.
