Waiting for the FCC to fine Oprah

Oprah can say "What the **** were you thinking? You were spread eagle holding your vagina," at 4 PM in the afternoon and nobody thinks anything of it.

Granted she wasn't trying to be raunchy, but still. Why is it that she can get away with talking about things like that?

It's not like this was on at 11PM at night, it was 4PM in the afternoon! I don't care why was talking about it, I just don't think that's really appropritate to talk about at a time when kids may be watching.

And of course there was the episode Howard Stern referened a lot, when she was talking about some pretty raunchy things.

Re: Waiting for the FCC to fine Oprah

Good question, crazytimes. The FCC says she is too "beloved" by America to fine her. Also that she isn't saying anything "titilating." What a crock!

Re: Waiting for the FCC to fine Oprah

Maybe it's because she's a woman talking to women . . .

You really can't compare her to Stern. He's crude and objectifies women. (And don't get me wrong, I'm amused by him).

I do agree, she should be told to calm it down . . . but who is letting their kids watch Oprah anyway . . . what kid would WANT to watch Oprah?

she needs to chill out, but she is no stern. There is no respect for other people with stern.

Re: Waiting for the FCC to fine Oprah

Well, who let's their kids watch/listen to Stern?

Lots of kids watch TV in the afternoons. I turned on the TV and was browsing through stations when I heard her comment.

I just think it's hypocritical to go after Howard Stern and not at least tell Oprah to tone it down a notch.

Re: Waiting for the FCC to fine Oprah

I for one know that when my dd is with her mom, she watches all these talk shows. I didn't even hear about this, but personally I think anything like that being said during that time of the day is wrong! Kids channel surf all the time!

Re: Waiting for the FCC to fine Oprah

Stern is on from 6:00 to 10:30, when kids are either getting ready for school or in school (or if it is summer usually ASLEEP!) Oprah is on in the afternoons, in many places exactly at the time kids are getting home from school and turning on the TV.

Does anyone think that maybe, just MAYBE, it would catch your child's eye to be channel surfing and see some teenaged girls talking about sex with Oprah?

Tossed salad, the lipstick game, etc....

It is outrageous that she has been able to get away with airing those shows without a fine from the FCC.

Re: Waiting for the FCC to fine Oprah

How about all the other trash talk shows? There aren't a lot left - but I think Maury and Montel are still out there. You usually can't hear the talking between the "beeps". And regular sitcoms constantly deal with sex - teens having sex.

There's a bunch of garbage on TV, everywhere. It's sickening.

Radio isn't much better. I like to listen to morning shows on my way to work. But I can't listen for 2 minutes before they're talking about sex. One radio station is telling women to send in their "shakey things" for new ones.

Has America dumbed down so much that the only thing that catches our attention is sex?

I agree, these shows are everywhere. One of the worst offenders is "That 70's Show" shown on FOX.

All you have to do is change the channel if you don't like it. It's your car. You have control.

cujo...

I have to say, your spinning cross freaks me out. It's like a neon sign that says, "I'm a Jesus Freak." You think Oprah is great and her comment about the girl playing with her vagina was appropriate....

Yeah, OK......

Re: Waiting for the FCC to fine Oprah

Everyone is entitled to an opinion Luv, she didn't share it nastily. Reading your response made me wonder if you would also think that only non-christians could be pro-choice. That seems like a much bigger discreptancy to me.

Back to Oprah, I do agree she needs to cool it. I got distracted when everyone was comparing her to Howard Stern, but being reminded that her show does come on in the afternoon is a big deal. There are lots of kids alone in the afternoon, with parents working. There shouldn't be anything on TV that would be "pg" until late in the evening, because in many cases there is no parent guidance to be available. So I can see that Stern should go late, Jerry SPRINGER(!!!!) and anyone else not willing to be 'G' rated.

Re: Waiting for the FCC to fine Oprah

I tend to watch more closely at evening time what my kids are watching. I don't think after school we should have to stand over them! Those shows should know who their target audience is or would be! What ever happened to the after school specials??

Well, since my kids are 2 and 4, they don't do much with books other than rip them or eat them.

Yes it's up to us parents . . . and our TV is on Nick Jr., Disney or PBS about 90% of the time. Luckily I don't have to deal with them wanting to watch "iffy" programs right now.

And I don't want to have to keep switching my radio station. Why does it always have to be crude? There's more going on in life than sex.

I did watch the show late last night, there was a rerun showing at 1 am. It was pretty raunchy. Definately over the top for a non-cable show in the afternoon.

I have sons aged 12 and 15. I don't monitor every single show they watch on non-cable. But I'm sure glad they didn't happen to land on Oprah while channel surfing yesterday.
