There were several men in our previous church that were involved in it. For the most part, it seemed awesome. Most of the guys I knew involved with it were some of the best men you could meet and they treated their wives like queens.
It is a shame it got a bad rap as some kind of "Men are kings of the manor" stuff. Of course there are some bad apples, but overall I think it is a good thing.
Wish my husband would go to it

Re: What do you think of Promise Keepers

I've been to one and it was a very inspiring time. Excellent to bring your son with you if he is a teenager or older. It's an incredibly humbling experience to be in a room with thousands of men praying or worshipping together.

Re: What do you think of Promise Keepers

Is Promise Keepers just for the men? I heard that they approve of the notion that women should be "subservient." I am not sure that this is too healthy for male/female relationships.

Re: What do you think of Promise Keepers

It is just for men. Men trying to be better men, better husbands, better dads. I think people confuse men being the head of the household, define it in American terms which means women lose rights. Thats not the case at all. From my understanding Promise Keepers does not advocate that definition of head of household.

Keepers DOES advocate head of household, but NOT where women are "subservient". Too many men, and preachers, have taken the verses out of context. Men are also to submit to their wives.. how often do you hear that one? Men are also supposed to submit to Christ... again, not oft quoted.

The idea is that when a man is submitting to Christ, he will be able to clearly lead his wife as an equal.

My marriage with Mrs Mayor is based on equality before God. But like in a every organization, the buck has to stop somewhere. I am the leader of the family and if I mess up, I am accountable to God. This is a large burden and not one to be taken likely. I would NEVER lord it over my wife. Most often, we are in agreement on all major issues.

Re: What do you think of Promise Keepers

All that testosterone pouring into one place, at one time, for one purpose, without something to balance it all out, is all of a sudden a good thing...? Since when??? Because, in my experience, if you get just [Only registered and activated users can see links. And there's some wierdo geographic link between "Promise Keepers" and "Hooters Family Restaurants" that's worth examining. Apparently..., they draw the same crowd.

Many men are very good at compartmentalizing things.

Oh, I don't know; I don't think you give men enough credit (nor does society as a whole). Men and their testosterone-driven crudeness and cluelessness are something of a myth, for the most part.

From what I have seen, men rise to the challenge of this experience and learn from GOOD EXAMPLES how to lead their homes. As for the whole subservient thing, our marriage grew to a whole new level when we realized and submitted to this plan God gave us. I am by no means a pushover, but I submit to my husband's authority all the time BECAUSE I trust that he is seeking God's will for us. So even when I think he is doing something dumb, I'll leave final decisions to him. (not without letting him know my views, of course, lol)

The thing is, this change was very freeing for me. It was soooooo nice to get out of the 'who's the boss' game!
Besides, the thing folks miss ALL THE TIME about the whole subservient verse is:

God's Word makes it waaaaaaaaaaaaay harder on the guy than on the girl! My husband is supposed to love me like CHRIST HIMSELF loved the church- wow.

Looking at it that way, I think I get off easy

Re: What do you think of Promise Keepers

I think men get a bad rap in this nation. Every sit com, ever commercial on TV, most movies show men as bumbling, stupid, sleazy horny, no self-control people. It shames me that there are women who catagorize all men that way, and feel like the superior ones, and feel they have the right to put down men that way. I have two sons, and a wonderful husband. In men I see hope, strength, and protection. Maybe if people thought more highly, more rightly about men, give them the respect they deserve, they would feel the ambition to attain that. Thats what Promise Keepers does, it assumes the best about men, that they are EQUAL to women, deserve the same respect, something that needs balance in this society.

Re: What do you think of Promise Keepers

Only been in the women's dormitories. You're right.

Of course, given a choice, I'll take girls' dorm over guys' locker room any day (or night)! Dorm smells better!!!
