Re: Human Cloning: Boon for Medical Research or a Slippery Slope.....?

Is there a rule against posting a link to an article sans comment, twonky? If so, where is it posted?

As far as how I feel about this issue, I am a bit skittish that someone will come along with enough money to pay someone to produce a clone for purposes not intended at the present time. Yep, that slippery slope thing.

How about your feelings on the subject, twonk?

Re: Human Cloning: Boon for Medical Research or a Slippery Slope.....?

I can see why many would find this a scary thing despite the fact that it is a way to "fast forward" the progress of battling the scourge of disease.

It is just a matter of time before someone will take advantage of this thing and turn it into an evil enterprise for their own material gain. A shame, but it's reality.

Why yes, there is. I just made it and it's right here.

Rule #X: You can't just post a link to an article sans comment.

If it's worth posting it's worth it for the original poster to comment on it.

Hey, I'll take a spare liver if that's possible!

If it will help make your point, sure.

Look, you obviously post an article to get people's opinions on it. All I'm saying is that from now on, if anyone posts an article from another source, be sure and start with the comments.

Is that reasonable?

Re: Human Cloning: Boon for Medical Research or a Slippery Slope.....?

Why is it everytime I read this stuff I think of Stephen King's "Pet Cemetary"?

I don't understand how they use the embryos. Do they kill them at a certain stage of development? If so, at how far along? Or do they grow them and then hold them in some sort of vegetative state for donation?

I just keep hearing about people growing siblings to save current children, etc.. I don't know; whole thing gives me the heebie-jeebies.

That is right. The purpose of this board is to provide a place for people to gather to discuss topics under religion and politics. Linking articles of interest is to prompt people to read them and comment on them. The reason I often don't post a comment along with the link is because I want to provide for people the chance to read the article first without being fettered with my opinion. Make sense?

I generally post links to articles with the plan in mind to interact with the people who post responses to those articles.

Bearing in mind what I posted above, could you please provide the rationale for providing a comment with a linked article?

Angela, I do believe they are destroyed in the process of whatever R & D project for which they are used.

You bet! The problem comes in when everyone wants to wait for someone else to make the first comment.

Cool. Someone has to be the first to comment so why not be the original poster?

if everyone waits for someone else to comment, nothing is ever posted. Seem reasonable?

Nope. Good stuff for everyone. I'd like to start a trend if possible.

I just keep hearing about people growing siblings to save current children, etc.. I don't know; whole thing gives me the heebie-jeebies.
From what I know, which is admittedly limited, the embryos come from "extras" generated during fertility treatments. Typically, for in vitro fertilization, the woman takes a drug which causes her ovaries to release many eggs instead of the usual one, and then a needle is used to harvest the eggs from the ovaries, then they're placed in a container with the man's sperm, and then some fertilized eggs are placed back into the woman's uterus in hopes that they'll grow into babies. I don't know at what stage of development they're used, but I'm pretty sure it's early enough to be a countable number of cells (like 8 or 16). If there are too many to use in one cycle, the rest can be frozen and then thawed at a later time for another cycle. Or donated to a couple who can't have kids of their own because her ovaries or eggs are bad. Or used for research. Or just destroyed because the couple can't afford to pay the fees for frozen storage and the government won't let them be used for research.

If a couple can have another baby because they're hoping the genetics will be right for a marrow transplant or whatever, I don't see why embryos which would otherwise be destroyed can't be used for research into cures for Parkinson's, Alzheimers, etc.

Well, it could happen that way, but doesn't always. Matters not though, as I get the drift, and it is no trouble for me to throw in a comment with my links. I just want people to read them, and if it takes a comment to go along with it, then so be it.
