| Franken, Garofalo to launch liberal radio
This should make for some interesting conversations here at DOD. I wish it was broadcast here so I could hear it. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] Franken, Garofalo to launch liberal radio NEW YORK (AP) — Comedian Al Franken is baiting conservatives again, and this time he's bringing along a bunch of friends to back him up. Franken will be the lead personality on Air America Radio, a startup venture promising a liberal alternative to powerhouse radio talk show pundits like Rush Limbaugh. The backers of Air America announced their programming lineup on Wednesday and said they planned to launch the network on March 31 in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. Franken will be joined by fellow TV comedian Janeane Garofalo, both of whom will have co-hosts for their live three-hour shows. Other shows will be hosted by Randi Rhodes, a radio personality from southern Florida, and Lizz Winstead, a co-creater of The Daily Show on Comedy Central. Franken, in a swipe at Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, plans to call his midday show The O'Franken Factor. |

As the one person on this board, as far as I know, who is legitimately is in the Radio business, I feel the need to comment on this idea. First of all, the twenty years ago the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank, wanted to wrestle the media away from those “da*n liberals.” They identified then AM radio as an easy first target. (Desperation being the mother of invention, I guess.). Through their efforts, and copying, which broadcasters are famous for, we now have accumulated loads of righty talk shows up and down the AM dial. Air America (Progressive Media) better have deep pockets; building a nationwide audience is a long and expensive endeavor. Their biggest challenge now is the AM stations they're using for their debut in NYC, LA & Chicago aren't equivalent in power or coverage to the existing Rush stations in those markets (WABC, KABC & WLS). So, it'll be an unfair comparison from the start. We have to hope Air America has a long financial rope and can let it grow slowly on the financial side. On the other hand, the audience potential--at least right now, when anti-Bush sentiment is so high--could be fairly spectacular.

I agree, Fun. There has to be more people willing to tune into a liberal talk show now more than ever. And because its being started by a few already well known celebrities, I bet there will be alot of people tuning in just our of curosity. I doubt they will have trouble attracting listeners at first, its keeping them that is going to be the hardest part. Especially for those listeners that are already stuck in their republican ways. To most, Rush can say or do no wrong.
This is one big unverifiable claim. We don't know that you are legitimately in the Radio business. If you claim these credentials, and you are using them to try to put more weight to your opinions, then post all of your credentials and verify them. Otherwise, this is nothing more than a crass statement and you should refrain from making such claims. |

If anyone else here is in the radio business, I would certainly welcome them to have a honest professional discourse on the challenges faced by the medium, as I did above. However, no person has stepped forward and revealed that information. So, I believe, at this point I am the only one here in the radio business, and I will place this caveat, that is willing to post. If you wish this board not to have professional opinion, just say so.

You're absolutely right, pandy. Anyone who follows anyone else around like a sheep is pretty clueless. I personally don't think either one of them has any credibility.
I wish if you claim to be a professional whose opinion is more valid than anyone elses that you produce your credentials. Simple as that. That is a valid request and trying to divert attention away from that issue is dichotomous. |

Come on guys, it wouldn't matter if you both were ice cream salesmen, your opinion is your opinion no matter what your profession. Remember, just because Bush is republican doesn't make him right, just right wing....lol
