Not really...do you have any idea how large some fraternities can be? Not to mention how long ago it was. I'm glad to know that our President shared in the American pasttime - drinking! LOL! |

I saw a special on it on the Discovery channel. It is very exclusive for the very rich and very connected. I don't think they're trying to rule the world in a James Bond Dr. No sort of way, but in the traditional American way of people of wealth and priviledge helping each other and making sure power stays within a very small circle. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours for the entited rich. |

Skull & Bones only taps 15 people a year, pretty much guaranteeing there will only be 800 or so S&B's members living at any given time. This exclusive membership keeps the membership of under grads to to a very low number since you are tapped as a junior. As an interesting side note, George's daughter Barbara had been tapped, but turned the invitation down.

FUNdamental: Actually, Barbara Bush was NOT tapped for Skull & Bones. FreeRepublic has a thread (Jan., 2004) entitled: MAKE NO BONES which comments on the Bush's daughter's failure to be tapped for the elite Skull & Bones ("has broken a family tradition"). |

These wealthy exclusive groups do everything to help each other: hire each other, give each other deals in business, donate to each other's political campaigns. The rich banker will refuse a loan to some and give preferential treatment to his wealthy friends. Grads of wealthy elite schools give fellow grads preferential treatment and special deals. Just more of keeping power in a small group which hasn't varied much in generations. There's a book just released about this wealthy exclusive ruling society in the US, but i can't remember the name right now. And small things that have lasting effects, like agreeing to not nominate a new guy to serve on a community committee, giving their own friends preferential treatment. New people can't get involved in local politics and never get to work their way up. That's how they retain control. They make pacts to vote against certain people so their business plans are rejected by the zoning committee, etc. and all the new business opportunities are saved for the priviledged wealthy. It's that whole attitude of being priviledged and not having to pitch in like us common people like when Leona Helmsley said "only little people pay taxes." |
