Maybe because churches are used many times for purposes other than religious services? Many of our churches (of varying denominations) are used that way here. For us, there really isn't a place in our jurisdiction that has room enough to have the voting booths, the registration table, space for waiting in line (although I've never had to wait more than five minutes), other than the fellowship hall of the Baptist church. Yes, we're THAT rural. Oops, I take that back. There is the township building, and we have voted there before, and I don't know why we don't now, unless it's because the church hall is more centrally located.

Usually the voting places are in schools, churches, etc. We have always gone to churches generally because they have a large amount of space available. With schools, it can be a problem because there are kids there there and stuff like that. |

I can see it now: "I was going to vote for the other party, but I took one look at the cross and couldn't bring myself to do it!" |

Nope...won't influence my vote at all. That would be silly. I was meaning, this is the first time I have ever voted and I thought it weird to have to go to a church to do it....the whole seperation of church and state thing kinda. But now since it seems its not so uncommon because of space restrictions, it makes more sense. I'll vote at a gay bar if that's where they are holding it, I don't care...lol

They need lots of space once a year. It's hard to find that and to justify buying a building you only use once a year especiallly when municipal budgets are so tight. So they ask local community facilities if they can use space once a year. In my city voting is in schools, churches, synagogues, community centers, senior housing--wherever is centrally located and where people are willing to donate space for free. |

In my town, people frequently donate their garages as voting stations! (Of course, the weather is usually pretty mild here in S. California.) I really like the feeling of that; sort of a neighborly, grassroots kind of thing.

Here in MD the schools are closed on Tuesday and that is where all the voting is done. When I lived in NC, schools were not closed and we voted at fire stations or rec centers. Makes more sense to me.
