| Bin Laden 'surrounded' :fingers crossed: Bin Laden 'surrounded' February 22, 2004 A BRITISH Sunday newspaper is claiming Osama bin Laden has been found and is surrounded by US special forces in an area of land bordering north-west Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Sunday Express, known for its sometimes colourful scoops, claims the al-Qaeda leader has been "sighted" for the first time since 2001 and is being monitored by satellite. The paper claims he is in a mountainous area to the north of the Pakistani city of Quetta. The region is said to be peopled with bin Laden supporters and the terrorist leader is estimated to also have 50 of his fanatical bodyguards with him. The claim is attributed to "a well-placed intelligence source" in Washington, who is quoted as saying: "He (bin Laden) is boxed in." The paper says the hostile terrain makes an all-out conventional military assault impossible. The plan to capture him would depend on a "grab-him-and-go" style operation. "US helicopters already sited on the Afghanistan border will swoop in to extricate him," the newspaper says. It claims bin Laden and his men "sleep in caves or out in the open. The area is swept by fierce snow storms howling down from the 10,000ft-high mountain peaks. Donkeys are the only transport." The special forces are "absolutely confident" there is no escape for bin Laden, and are awaiting the order to go in and get him. "The timing of that order will ultimately depend on President Bush," the paper says. "Capturing bin Laden will certainly be a huge help for him as he gets ready for the election." The article says bin Laden's movements are monitored by a National Security Agency satellite. On Thursday last week, General Richard Myers, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, said America had been engaged in "intense" efforts to capture bin Laden, who was believed to be hiding in the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan. But he insisted that the focus of the search had not narrowed for months. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

| Re: Bin Laden 'surrounded' Leave it to a British newspaper to blame Bush... of course, the general consensus is that not only do we have him surrounded, we're waiting until November 1st to haul him out, so it'll be really fresh in everyone's minds for the election. Does this sound just a tad ridiculous to anyone else? |

It has been over three and a half years since this post was made; did they finally capture him here? President Bush says he really doesn't give bin Laden much thought, so I was thinking maybe he was captured and the liberal news media just didn't cover it.

FOX NEWS may proclaim that it offers "Fair And Balanced" reporting, but much of its work is about as "fair and balanced" as saying that someone is "a little bit pregnant." Many times FOX NEWS will simply runs with a "mainstream media" criticism, or bash a person or idea in the guise of being critical of the other media. A perfect example would be a recent piece by FOX NEWS entertainment reporter ROGER FRIEDMAN who reprised the familiar "corporate radio won't play great artists" canard --the "victim" this time being anti Bush artist BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN through his new album, "Magic." In a recent piece, FRIEDMAN asserts that "sources tell me that CLEAR CHANNEL has sent an edict to its Classic Rock stations not to play tracks from "Magic" -- either because SPRINGSTEEN's album contains liberal, anti-war lyrics, or that SPRINGSTEEN is passé. Apparently, some CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rockers didn't get the memo. A simple search in MEDIABASE, a company that monitors and tracks airplay, will tell you the lead track off the new album, "Radio Nowhere," is currently getting airplay on no less than 11 of Clear Channel's Classic Rock stations. FRIEDMAN went even further, declaring that "The No. 1 album is not being played on any radio stations, according to RADIO & RECORDS, which monitors such things. Nothing." Mr. Friedman is apparently not aware R&R doesn't "monitor" airplay, they publish playlists submitted by radio stations. Mr. Friedman should now make a public correction. According to MEDIABASE, a company that actually does "monitor"airplay, at least 100 different "corporate" radio stations are playing "Radio Nowhere" in high rotation. More contradicting data: Over 22% of airplay on all of the tracks off "Magic" has been aired on CLEAR CHANNEL stations. They also provided 25% of all the airplay for "Radio Nowhere," which has already been the most-played song on AAA formatted (Adult Album Alternative) radio. FRIEDMAN apparently doesn't believe AAA is a legitimate format by stating, "SPRINGSTEEN [and] 'older' artists have been relegated to something called Triple-A format stations (i.e. either college radio or small artsy stations such as WFUV in the BRONX, N.Y.) which are immune from the CLEAR CHANNEL virus of pre-programming." That, of course, will come as news to the half-dozen AAA stations are owned by the so-called "virus" known as CLEAR CHANNEL, including the "small, artsy" KBCO/DENVER, which has been one of the top-5 stations in the market; as well as top-10 AAA stations KTCZ/MINNEAPOLIS and KWMT/TUCSON. While one would be tempted to dismiss such reporting as typical, considering the source, the problem is that stories like these perpetuate other lies. Indeed, other websites that spout anti-consolidation views have linked this report to the historical "fact" that CLEAR CHANNEL banned the DIXIE CHICKS because of their anti-war views -- when, in fact, it was CUMULUS, another large radio station owner, that issued the ban. And so it goes, Fox News, sloppy with the facts.
