"The Passion of The Christ"

Has anyone seen the movie yet? I know it doesn't 'come out' until a week from Wednesday (Ash Wednesday), but many have seen it already, and our oldest daughter (23) went to see it tonight. I haven't talked to her yet, so I don't know what she thought of it, but I know she was really looking forward to seeing it.

If you've seen it, what are your thoughts?

EDIT: She's to see it next Monday, Feb. 23.

Merchandising? I'd call that promotion.

A listing of theaters and a soundtrack offer is merchandising? Mel Gibson had better fire his PR firm if that's the best they can do!

I can see that the word "Merchandise" listed under Spread the Word might confuse some!

I have absolutely no interest in seeing this movie. I also might not ever see another Mel Gibson movie. We'll see.

I see that now. I'd been to that site a couple of times before this and never noticed it. I don't think the merchandising aspect will be a significant part of Mel's project. I think the message in the film will make an impact on many, many people. I think it will be just like it was in Jesus' time. Some will reject it (either after seeing the film or by not seeing it at all), some will be changed by it, some will be renewed by it.

EDIT: I just edited my above post to clarify a bit.......when I say 'it,' I mean the message of salvation, not the film per se. The film is just another way of presenting the message.

Didn't see the merchandise the first time I went through... Still, what's the big deal about it? It's not like they're offering Crucifixion Happy Meals!

I have not seen it either, but dh and I both will see it at some point. I personanlly applaude Mel Gibson for having the courage to make a movie that he truly believes in knowing that it would cause controversy as well as possible hurt his carrer. I also admire him for being so open about his religious beliefs and personal struggles within his life.

I whole-heartedly agree... highly unusual in this day and age to see any public figure take a stand for anything. Did y'all see him last night with Dianne Sawyer? I was so impressed with his responses. He was emphatic in what he believed without sounding preachy or fanatical. Plus he made some excellent points about why he did his film the way he did.
Now having said all that I don't know if I'll see the movie I am such a wimp! The Patriot about killed me, doubt I'd make it through this one

Anyway, I wasn't much of a Mel Gibson fan before last night, but now I have a whole new opinion of him.

p.s. I didn't see anything saying merchandise, not that it matters

Re: "The Passion of The Christ"

Mel put $25 million of his own money into this project, risking total alienation by the Jesus-hating Hollywood crowd. While I do not agree completely with his theology, I applaud him for following his heart and working on a meaningful project. I have a hunch this film will be a blockbuster.

I think many people are going to come out of the theater having to think about who Jesus really is. And that is a good thing.

Re: "The Passion of The Christ"

With all due respect, mayor, I'm not sure what you mean by "Jesus-hating Hollywood crowd". Because I assume that MANY religious films have been made by that "crowd", and no hatred of Jesus seems to oooze out of those movies.

As to Mel's film, I cannot comment on its content, and I will not view it in the theatres.

I LOVED King of Kings as a young person, and Jesus Christ, Superstar IS my favorite film of Christ (and, as I mentioned before, I did not like The Last Temptation of Christ).

Personally, I think that Mel's "The Passion of the Christ" would be very depressing (for me).

Re: "The Passion of The Christ"

You know, it would probably be depressing for me, too, but I know how it turns out in the end (the end of the story, not necessarily the end of the movie), and that is anything BUT depressing.
