Discussion: God said "be a fisherman?"

If God appeared to you in a series of vivid and moving dreams and told you to leave everything behind, travel alone to the Red Sea and become a fisherman, what would you do? What if you were told to sacrifice your child?

God sacrificed His only Son for me. Who I am to question His wisdom and purposes?

I don't believe He would ask any of us to do that as He did of Abraham. Besides, Abraham didn't have to kill Isaac. God provided the lamb for the sacrifice.

Re: Discussion: God said "be a fisherman?"

Reading these stories in the bible gives greater understanding, otherwise its like trying to figure out a puzzle from one piece. The men Jesus was talking to were already fishermen. God was asking them to be fishers of men. Meaning sharing the good news.

Abraham tells his servants, as he brings his son up to the rock, that they would Both be returning. He also tells his son Issac that God would be providing the sacrifice. He did not know how, but he had faith that God would work it out. God abhors child sacrifices, in those days it was very common to other gods. God was demonstrating, and prophesying how a father would give his son as a sacrifice, which is what he did with Jesus, which he did through Abrahams line.

To answer your question,if I KNEW it was the Lord telling me, and what I was hearing was confirmed, and lined up with his word, I would obey. And if I couldn't, then I would ask for the strength to obey. He loves us.

Re: Discussion: God said "be a fisherman?"

I agree with hrdlife1, NO WAY! I don't believe God would really want me to kill a child. Think about all the terrible things people do, thinking God "told me to do it!" Mass suicides, bombings, terrorists blowing themselves up in crowded shopping centers.... That poor crazy woman who drowned her 6 kids in the bathtub thought God wanted her to do it. People can talk themselves into just about anything when they say "God said so!" But evil is evil, and it is up to us to know that. If "God" was appearing to me in dreams and telling me to do these kind of things, I would go get immediate professional help, because I would know that I was CRAZY!

EXCELLENT POINTS!

Telling people to blindly obey people who claim to speak for god is DANGEROUS. It is the cause of most wars in our history. People will always try to control other people and use the threat of god to keep them in line.

What about Jim Jones? Hundreds of people lost their lives because he confinced them god wanted them to drink poison.

I hate that story about Abraham. I don't believe a good god would want a good man to kill his son. Sorry, nope, don't believe it. Just a story used to make weak people obey those in power. To keep people scared and in line.

Re: Discussion: God said "be a fisherman?"

Not to be redundant, but I suggest that the whole story is read. Abraham was a prophet, he knew he would not truly be sacrificing his son.

You all brought up great points of people who use the power of God for evil. We see that all across the board, in every religion. I am confused that this question posed is truth implied that is incorrect, but any type of correction made to correct the quote is not accepted.

Lastly, the scripture in the 10 commandments is "thou shall not murder". Murder and kill are two different things. I bring this up not to defend what God may or may not have said in any situation, I am just correcting an incorrect quote of the bible.

What people believe is going to be different across the board. As a Christian, all I care about is helping people, trying to displace untruths about peoples self worth. I want to let people know how valued they are, how much they are loved, how sin has really affected this world, how everyone was planned, with a valuable purpose for their life. How and where we can find hope in this painful world. Where we can go to finds someone to lift the unliftable burdens, to hold our hand during our darkest hour whether we feel it or not, the saviour of our spirit and soul.

Re: Discussion: God said "be a fisherman?"

That is so true Mayfly, A lot of these accounts are used for purposes of control by those who misinterpret them or are able to influence those who just won't read it for themselves.
If all one sees is Abraham was expected by God to kill his son then the whole point of the account is missed. There are too many biblical accounts that are isolated, misread and misinterpreted then used by the power hungry and greedy to control and exploit others. It is a sad thing that the bible is used this way, and it is sad that because of their sin, others wind up attributing these evils to God rather than the one who committed tham and also refuse to read and find out the whole story for themselves.

Amen to your posts Mayfly, you are very articulate and commpassionate in your words, God will use you in a mighty way!

God BLess!!
