Is there any software that detects what gets installed on a PC?

Greetings....

I am wondering if there is any software out there that detects any file/application/log entry that gets installed or copied onto a PC.

In other words a complete hard drive monitoring tool.

I know that there is "SD-Resident" that comes with Spybot that detects any registry changes, for example.

.
Additional Details

Please note that I have Windows 2000 Pro installed on my PC.

The System Restore option is on Windows XP & Vista, only.

I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for so I'll give two recommendations:

If you're looking for something that detects programs (malware) attempting to access your registry, I think antiviruses in general will detect that. I have kaspersky myself but its a little pricey but the protection it gives is good.

If your looking for something that monitors your hard drive to prevent things like it from failing, etc. I found these sites:

Both sites sell the same thing I think but the second one seems a bit more informative (user friendly). Mind you, I think these a latter options are more hardware monitoring (like temperature of drive,etc.). It looks that you have to by quite tech savvy to use these though. But I'm guessing if you're asking then you should be okay .
