Stains on carpet, etc.

Does anyone know a cheap way to get hair dye stain out of carpet?

Also, there is a hole in my ceiling above the staircase- is there a cheap way to seal this? I'm renting so I really need to get this fixed (the landlord doesn't do anything and the hole was there when I moved in)

Re: Stains on carpet, etc.

Hi,
The hair dye stain, it's dried (dumb question, I know.. ), but how long has it been dried and how long has it been there?
For the hole in the ceiling, I'd guess you could use the same things that are used for walls that fill in places where things have been hung, prior to painting, which would be wood putty. Actually, that depends n- how big is the hole and are you going to paint it or touch it up afterwards?

Re: Stains on carpet, etc.

That sounds like a difficult stain to deal with, but maybe this will help. I spilled a little nail polish on beige carpet, and I was ready to give up on removing the stain, when I did an internet search for help. Several sites mentioned shaving cream as a miracle stain remover for carpeting. Sure enough, the stain came out and it didn't remove the color from the carpeting! Just mentioning this in case nothing else helps...

Shaving cream?! I will try that, thanks. The stain has been there a good couple months I'd say.

The hole is about the size of a golf ball. There's also moisture around the hole.

Re: Stains on carpet, etc.

I tried the shaving cream thing, and it didn't really work. However, it didn't stain the carpet (which is tan) which is good. Any other ideas?

Re: Stains on carpet, etc.

Hi, If it were me, I would contact one of the major haircolor companies or check their websites for FAQ's. They may be helpful.

Good luck

Re: Stains on carpet, etc.

If the stain hasn't set into the carpet too deep, you might be able to snip the very top fibers of the carpet without anyone knowing. Or call a professional who knows how to deal with old carpet stains, or rearrange your furniture to hide the stain.

Sorry the shaving cream didn't work. I did have to work at it awhile before it did the trick -- it didn't come out right away.

Re: Stains on carpet, etc.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try all these ideas until something works.

Actually the shaving cream did work a little bit, but you can still sort of tell that there's a stain there.

I'm just worried about when I move out, which isn't for awhile, but still. When I first moved in, the landlord put her nose directly up to the carpet and sniffed it because the people before me had a dog! I also live in a duplex with the landlord right next door, so yeah, it's a bit intimidating!

Well, maybe you can go over it again and see if more comes out. That's what I did.

I would NOT snip out or cut the tops off any fibers unless it's only a couple. More than that and it would be noticeable (been there, done that), and of course, at that point there's no turning back .

One other solution is to remove a small square of carpet from a hidden area such as inside a closet, cut out the same size square where the stain is, and swap them. That would work only if it's a really good match, so the carpet would have to be in great condition. Your landlord may go for that idea.

Maybe you'd just feel better discussing the situation with the landlord? Sounds like it's causing you a lot of worry

Haha, well I'm a natural worrier and I'm very technical. Well, I'll try the shaving cream thing again. Thanks again

Re: Stains on carpet, etc.

Just wondering if you ever tried contacting the haircolor manufacturer's website? I would like to know what they recommend (since they probably get that type of question from their customers),or if it's one of those stains that you (unfortunately) shouldn't waste your time trying to remove ? Good luck & keep us posted, ok ?

Cheap way??

Just go to walmart, stop by the carpet section, and see if they have an area rug.

Re: Stains on carpet, etc.

My sister uses shampoo on carpet stains. You could try that. Also, might check out [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] They have a lot of tips for all sorts of things on there, and you might find some help there.
