My niece was in a terrible car accident...2 fatalities...

I'm not sure how to explain this all, but I'll just outline the basic situation:

At about 2:30 am on Thursday morning my niece and two of her friends were in a car accident. My niece is currently in ICU, and her two friends were pronounced dead at the scene.

They had went out for the night and were heading for home when the accident occured. My niece was driving. The car went into a sharp curve too fast. The car went off the road and hit a metal utility pole, did a 180 degree spin back into the path of an oncoming car which then hit them "head on". The news reports say that both cars went into the curve at speeds that were just too fast.

The people in the other car are reported to be all right. The driver of that car was charged with a DUI.

The news reports say that alcohol and the cars speeds were to blame. It has yet to be determined/released to the public what specifically may have caused the two girls' death... It has been reported that they were both in the back seat of the car. It's also been reported that none of the people were believed to be wearing seat belts, but that it would not have helped the two girls in any way.

They had been at a popular college-type bar/club...I'm assuming they have an "over 18" night on Wednesday's...

It has been reported that my niece (age 19) and her two friend's (ages 20 and 23) had possibly been drinking. The hospital will not release to my niece or her Mother what the results (if any) were of my niece's Blood Alcohol Content test. My niece admits to having had a couple of drinks...

The family of one of the girl's (the friend [20 year old] that my niece was the closest to), has already communicated to our family that they do not blame my niece for the girl's death. Her Mother has visited my niece at the hospital and talked in private with her.

That same family has tried to contact the other girl's family, and the driver of the other car... none of them will talk with the family.

My niece has not yet been legally charged with anything, but we are expecting that to happen soon. She will be in the hospital for at least a few weeks supposedly. Her main injury is that the femur (thigh bone) in her right leg was broken and required surgery to place a metal rod/pins in it. Her left wrist is broken, she has lacirations (cuts, some small, some deep, some quite large) all over. And there have been multiple blood clots found in her leg/lungs; my understanding is that at present the blood clots are the most serious risk. A filter has been placed in her to attempt to keep the clots from reaching her heart, which could result in her death.

And at this point she still does not recall anything that happened after the three girl's got in the car to leave the club they were at... But I understand that this kind of a "mental block" is quite common in this kind of a situation.


What I am asking is that people please pray for the families of the two girls that died. The girl that was closest to my niece, she has a two year old daughter that my niece is an "unofficial" Aunt to... Pray for the little girl... And both of these families need prayers to help them through the grieving process, and being able to cope with the loss of their loved ones...

I believe that the people in the other car, there were three, they are probably having a hard time dealing with the fact that they were in a car accident which resulted in two fatalities...pray for them... I'm not sure what to ask for them specifically...

I'm also asking for prayers that my niece will recover healthwise, and that she will have the strength to be able to get through all the psyhcological affects that this is going to have on her... And getting through the legal aspects too.

And my niece's Mother (my sister) and her step-Father are also going through health problems of their own, and all of this is making it so much worse for them also... Please pray for their health, and strength to help get them and their daughter through the coming months.

Also, my Mother, she's been sick on and off over the last few weeks and now she is having a hard time dealing with this... She's older and our family is keeping an eye on her too...

OMG!! That is terrible!

Your niece is toast legally. If she was drinking she won't be able to get out of this one. That is a shame that in this day and age people still drink and drive....usually the least drunk person drives. Alcohol and speed are never a good mix. The sad thing is that usually people who drink and drive and get in an accident- it isn't their first time drinking and driving. It is just the first time something bad happens. So awful!!

That is so terrible! I was in a similar accident some years back but no one was killed. I was the only one who was the most injured. I know how tough it is. I hope everything gets all right soon. Praying for the best for everyone involved in the accident.

Beffie, I do know what you are going through right now. I have been through it. My stepson was drinking and had his best friend with him(also drinking) My stepson was driving and they wrecked on a curve, but no other car involved. They hit a tree and the car burst into flames. His best friend was killed. My stepson was in ICU for 12 days. He had to do 5 years in prison for vehicular homocide.


Everyone involved in the accident is in my thoughts and prayers , as well as you and your Family. Things like this are terrible freak accidents. No one thinks it will ever happen to them.

OOHH I am so sorry to hear this. OMG, this just makes me want to cry. DD just started driving and this kind of thing is my worst nightmare. How sad for all these families. All will be in my thoughts and prayers.

This is just so terribly terribly sad to hear. I really do pray for your niece and for the poor families who lost loved ones in this accident. I can't even imagine the awful pain everyone is in right now.

Although no one close to me has died in a car accident, there have been many people I went to school with who died early on in life due to accidents. It is awful for the families of those who died, but it is also very difficult for those who survive.

And I only found out on 1-11 that the second girl that died, she also had a young daughter... I hadn't known this when I originally posted... So please add an extra prayer for her!!!

Just an update:

My niece spent 8 days in ICU... She's now in a room on the Physical Therapy/Rehabilitation floor. She's started her physical therapy and it seems that it is going okay.

And, this seems awfully strange to me, but...My niece has not yet been legally charged with anything, but we are expecting that to happen soon. The police still have not even attempted to talk with her... This is making me very leery of what the results will be when they finally do talk with her... And we have been trying to help her understand that she is going to be in serious trouble.

Our family hasn't been told any "new" information about the accident, but the Coroner had informed my sister on the day of the accident that it was the impact of the other car that killed the two girls. And it was not clear if my niece's car hit the pole, then was hit by the other car; or if her car was hit and caused her to hit the pole. So we are more confused of the circumstances concerning the accident now, then we were before. And my niece still can not remember anything past the three of them getting into the car to leave were they were at.
