prayers for mom-in-law

Hubby got call this AM from his sis, that thier mom had broken wrist & fractured hip.

She's in Alzheimer's Unit Wing of Hospital & sis-in-law works next door at eye place & lives close so she's main contact.

Mom-in-law (Pat) has progressively gotten worse & wanders into other rooms in the night. Story hubby was given was she went into another residents room & they were scared & "pushed" her.

Sis-in-Law is going to look into herbal things to help her sleep, but I'll mention the electronic pad that my bro' Dave had at last stages of cancer that alerted personell & Dave when he tried getting outta' bed unassisted.

Not sure why the Alzeimher's wing didn't try that electronic pad with Pat, since they knew she wandered around in the middle of the night.

Re: prayers for mom-in-law

Hi,
You're in our prayers as well. I don't know about the herbal meds as they "could" interfere with her current meds. The one that would help her sleep the most, though is Valerian.
Though I'm more with you on what you suggested. Hope things improve, keep us posted.

Hugs,

M

Re: prayers for mom-in-law

Your right & I hope sis' in law knows enough to check with Dr. on herbs that'll interact with current medications. I know she was on sleep medication before, if she still is - either doseage is wrong or it needs changing to different one perhaps? Or, if they've stopped giving it to her altogether - they must have a good reason.

Hubby & his sis don't call each other much, so I'll call her myself & touch base on Pat & mention both herb interaction & the electronic pad.

Thanx again for all your continued prayers for my family members, it's very much appreciated.

Re: prayers for mom-in-law

Lisa,
Lots of times when a person has been on a med, say a sleeping med, for awhile, it doesn't work as well as it did at first as the body gets used to it. Maybe she needs a different pill or dose? Just a thought, gee, you're going through TOO much, our prayers are with you and you MIL.

Hugs,

Marilyn

Re: prayers for mom-in-law

Since we heard of MIL accident this wknd, Weds nite I asked hubby if "he" was going to call his sis' who works in same hospital as MIL's Alzheimer's wing 'cuz lunch hrs she says she visits daily.

Hubby said "Tonite"? - His family is NOT close like my side & I have "alot" on my side right now, but will call SIL soon.

Weds. at 5PM I called my daughter & she had been at the hospital since around 12:30. She got call from ex-SIL at work saying her dad (my Ex) is in hospital. He's been diagnosed with cancer since April & he's more "yellow" than before chemo etc..

Re: prayers for mom-in-law

I got return cal from SIL & it turns out what she told hubby last wknd wasn't correct, it's her pelvic bone not hip that's fractured - but still has a broken wrist.

She was in lots of pain, but they took her off medication that started with a "D" 'cuz it was making her so "loopy" SIL said. SIL said she noticed much more non drugged awareness within a bit over 24 hrs.

SIL works next to wing MIL is in for Alheizmers & now she's been visiting not only during lunch, but also goes after work & feeds her supper too. This way she "know" she's getting nutrients into her mom to help with healing process. SIS called from work, so that's pretty much all we discussed, but do want to touch base on other issues mentioned here earlier.

I told her I'd call her weekly if her brother/my hubby don't to check in, & will MIL flowers. SIL said I may want to wait a couple days on that til' she's "more with it" after that hefty meds she was on.

There's 3 cats in Alzheimer's unit & I know some dried flowers act like catnip to them, - so if anyone knows of any other flowers to avoid for cats I'd appreciate knowing.

Daughter said her dad will be at hospital til' Monday. His temp stint needs observing for negative affects.

Thanx for prayers for both of them, rough start to 2007!

Re: prayers for mom-in-law

UPDATE ON MIL:
Hubby called his Sis & latest is that she has good days & bad days. Some times she refuses to get out of bed. Other times bearing weight or just sitting is ok for short times. Because of her Alzheimer's she keeps asking about the cast on her wrist tho'. Hubby doesn't think enough to discuss things like medication & safety issues with his sis' - but at least he called. (Even if was after me telling him too do so a few times).
---------------------------------------------------------------
Update on daughter's father/my ex:
1/17 admitted to local hospital & had needle stuck in liver & bag to drain toxins. They couldn't change his stint since cancer has grown all around it. Then 1/22 they sent him to Boston, MA hospital to have the stint chg'd by more experience Dr.s. That operation was 1/24 & he was home by 9AM 1/25.

Daughter said they explained to him next place the cancer would probably grow is his intestines & he'd no longer be able to eat.She also said the Dr.'s gave him 6 wks to 3 months!! He wants Daughter to be his medical proxy, yet no paperwork has been signed.

He has Dr appt on Mon. 1/29 to "discuss options". Not sure if that means "radiation next" or stopping all chemo for quality of life issue. This is what happened to my mom & my older bro' when lung cancer spread to thier brain. My daughter is well aware that is probably what will be discussed with her father on 1/29.

She says he's "still" in denial about his illness & went away with girlfriend this weekend to a cabin they frequent regularly. Daughter said she thinks "he's hiding out there". I told her previously that I thought he wants to die there, she agrees.
