Re: STROKE

Hi-
My mother at 89 had a series of small strokes, TIAs, and they were somewhat controlled with medication. She didn't do everything the doctors suggested, such as exercise, but she did the rehab and took her meds. At 92 she had a major stroke which left her paralyzed on her right side.
The thing that no one seemed to realize, that my cousin knew about was that stroke victims (even major, paralyzing strokes!) can continue to recover for many years afterward. We had her moved to a smaller nursing home (the original one was way over-crowded, the second one in a smaller town) and my sister went in every day to make sure she was cared for and gettin PT and the nurses were working with her. The center of balance (I think it is called) if off, vision is off (mom wouldn't open her eyes the first few months because she thought she couldn't see! We had to tell her to try to look at us. After two years, she could recognize me 20 feet away although she was near-sighted!) And she had trouble eating, writing, sitting up, and so on, all of which improved. Remember, she was elderly to begin with, but she lived 6 years after her major stroke and that is not what killed her, it was a complication of her digestive system.
There is a lot of information somewhere about stroke recovery. My cousin-a survivor of 5 anyeurisms (sp) in her brain found the information. It must be on the internet, and the right healthcare provider, whether it be doctor or therapist, can do wondrous things.
I will pray for your dad, and you must be his advocate. Without all of her daughters, the doctors might have sent my mom to hospice to die after her stroke.
Best Wishes,
Leesa

Re: STROKE

Nice hearing from you & I really do hope more days get better for all. With you working more - you probably will have delayed grief (especially near your wedding day).

I mentioned this before - maybe by email about some wedding ceremonies "ringing a bell once" for each person who has passed on that you want to remember on your special occasion. It "might" be something think about doing on your special day.

When you call your mom just ask "how she's doing now" & your brother too. Subject of former calls may've changed - but this will show your love hasn't.

I wish I had an answer to the "WHY" him question, it would come in handy "again" if I knew the answer for myself.

Take Care of yourself & try enjoying your neice & nephew & think how blessed "you" are to have them in your life!

Re: STROKE

Nancy,
Thank you for being here. The "why" question is one with no anwers that we know of here. It's so hard, for you, your Mom and the rest of your family. True too, when you call, just ask how they're doing - hopefully, they'll also ask how you're doing as I know you're having an awful time with this too - be a comfort to each other. We care. Prayers will continue.
Hugs,
Marilyn
