Please pray for my dad!

Please pray for my dad, Paul, and the rest of my family. He found out he has cancer of the esophagus a couple weeks ago. Luckily, it seems to all be contained in one tumor. He is having surgery next Friday, the 11th, to have the tumor removed. They will know for sure then if it has spread or not but don't think it has. Please pray for him during the operation and for a speedy recovery. The operation is supposed to last 4-5 hours! That will feel like an eternity for my mom, my sister and I in the waiting room I'm sure. He will be spending Father's day in the hospital, but we are praying he will be well on the road to recovery by then! Thank you!

Oh, what a scary situation! What were his symptoms that he knew something was wrong? Here's hoping for the best for him and your entire family, and hang in there!

The way he knew that something was wrong: He had been having trouble swallowing for a couple months. He said it would feel like food was getting stuck there at the base of his esophagus. He had his thyroid removed about a year ago so thought it could be related to that somehow altho that is a different area. He went to the doc and the doc tried treating it with medicine and that didn't work. He finally did a scope down his throat and that is when they found the mass. They tested it and found out it was cancerous so that is when they did other tests to see if the cancer has spread. So far, so good on those tests. Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers!

Thanks for all of your prayers. Well, it turned out to be a lot worse than they thought it was. The second CT scan he had showed that he also had a mass in his lungs they needed to investigate. Turns out that was cancerous too. The surgery day was awful. What they said would be a 4-5 hour surgery turned into a 9 hour surgery. It was alot worse than they expected. He is doing really well today tho but is still on a respirator to help him breathe. They have turned it down quite a bit tho so that is good. Please continue to pray as he is not out of the woods yet! Thanks for your prayers.

Sorry to hear it was worse than initially thought, and I know all too well how agonizing those long waits during surgery can be.

Well, it has been a bumpy two weeks!! Nine days after my dad's surgery, he was still on a ventilator and they told us he had Stage 4 Cancer, fluid in his lungs and was just going to get worse. By this past Saturday, he was not getting better, they weren't able to wean him off the ventilator so we decided to tell him what was going on and make sure we did what he wanted. We knew he did not want to live that way and decided to take him off the ventilator. He agreed. It was a beautiful morning. About 10 of my relatives were gathered in his room. We stood around his bed reciting prayers for him as they took the breathing tube out. He started breathing on his own! He continued to improve all that day, all the next day, and by Sunday the fluid in his lungs was completely gone so they moved him out of the ICU and into a regular room! He is doing so well today they are talking about sending him home Thursday! Even the nurses and doctors say they have never seen anyone bounce back so fast! GOD IS AWESOME!!!

I firmly believe it was because of all the wonderful people praying for him that he is doing so well!! I know he still has a tough road ahead-probably chemo and radiation - but to have just these past three days with him has been amazing!! I thought I'd never see him again after Saturday! All the prayers is what got him thru it! He still has work to do here on earth I guess. I can't wait to see what it is!

By the way-We found out the news about the cancer on Father's Day! It wasn't a very good Father's Day. I still have his cards and presents at home and we are gonna give them to him when he gets home!

stking, that is such terrific news about your dad! I'm so happy for you and your family. Prayer is a powerful thing, always trust in God that He will lead you in the right direction. Cherish every moment you have with your dad from this day on.

I'm not even sure what to say! Wow! I had a lump in my throat as I started to read what you wrote today. My dad has had some health problems lately and though not as severe as this, I could put myself in your shoes a little bit.... But to read on and discover what happened next...I just welled up. How amazing!
