The amazon GCs are stackable, meaning that you can enter them in your amazon account prior to ordering and amazon banks them for you (if the number you enter is a promo certificate, amazon will tell you--in which case, you just use that one as a coupon before the completion of the ordering process). Gift certificates are not "name dependent", meaning that if you have one and your husband has one, you can enter both numbers in your Amazon GC account and they will be there together.
When you purchase at Amazon, the value of all the gift certificates in your account is deducted first (unless you opt for them not to do that) and any amount over what you have in GCs is the cost you have to make up by another payment method. At checkout time, if you have used the value of your GCs and have a promo gc, then you enter that number in the coupon field (only one promo per order).
If you don't use the entire balance of your GC account, the remaining balance stays there until you use it or it expires. Watch the expiration dates on the emails you receive, some expire in less time than others. I usually keep the email with the GC number/expiration date in a separate folder in my mail program so that I can refer to expiration dates. I enter the GC in my Amazon account when I receive the emails, even if I am not ordering at the moment--it's an easy way to tell whether it's a promo or a real GC - I keep the promo certificates in a separate folder to use as needed.
