Pez was invented in 1927 by Eduard Haas. Haas was an Austrian inventor and an anti-smoking advocate and his peppermint-flavored Pez was sold as a cigarette substitute. The word Pez comes from the German word for peppermint or Pfefferminze. Eduard Haas first imported the candy into the U.S. in 1952. Initial sales of the candy were low, however, Haas reinvented the candy with a new packaging - as a child's toy - a dispenser with cartoon heads and new fruit flavors - the popular Pez dispenser.
