Not true. I've used lots of gc/coupon combinations, and a gc is just another form of payment at amazon. However, there are two kinds of gcs -- regular (stackable) and promotional.
Gift certificates with a fourteen character claim code are "regular" or stackable. You can use any number of them together with a credit card and with ONE promotional code.
The promotional gcs have a sixteen character claim code. You may use one promotional code or coupon per order.
So, if you enter a sixteen character gc claim code, you won't be able to use a coupon with it. If you use a coupon, you won't be able to use a promotional gc in the same order.
Now, having said all that (at great length, sorry 'bout that), I'd guess that dealdood's answer is probably the correct one for this situation.
