The Friday directly after Thanksgiving (American Thanksgiving, NOT Canadian Thanksgiving) used to be the biggest retail shopping day of the year. Retailers called this day "Black Friday" from the accounting term "in the black" meaning profitable. If you were in the red before Thanksgiving, The Friday after thanksgiving you should place you in the black.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is no longer the biggest shopping day of the year, in the past five years the largest shopping day has been the Saturday directly before Christmas.
