good news: I think the $50 is refunded (but it is a bit confusing, check out the details before ordering).

bad news: in the $200 package, the "spectra cool cam" is only a "web cam"..in other words, low-resolution tethered camera. These show up for free/nearly free after rebate frequently.

I think the staples deals are better (IMO). Haven't compared the bestbuy and compusa deals, since those tend to be more available only in store (none near me).

oops...yes just saw that its refundable by mail.

can try to use the $15 rebate on the 256 MB ram also.

also use a $ off link for new customers. $30 off $150 for home upgrade, or use $50 off $250 or $60 off $350 for pro upgrade.

Sushi, do you know of a working coupon link? I tried a bunch of them today and they all came up as expired (even the ones that were supposed to be good into next month)

I've changed my mind (sorta), in that the XP Pro Upgrade deal here, along with a $60 off coupon, is also very good. You get:

1. xp pro upgrade
2. 256Meg ram (good)
3. macafee virusscan (yawn)
4. spectra web cam (maybe ok)
5. 12Z10X32 cdrw (very good)
6. hp2100 scanner (good)

all for a net of $130-ish, and only one rebate form for $50.

a lot less work than staples and less $ at risk for rebate (only $50).

I wanted a digicam as a present for my parents, so I also did
the staples xp deal using the xp home upgrade and coupons. Won't pay very much, but will have more work and more cash flow outstanding in rebates.

I couldn't decide, so I did them both

Thanks so much Sushi for this deal. We went to the store right away yesterday and they had everything out on one shelf for easy grabbing. 5 minutes and we were out of the store. Guess I should have done it online for the extra coupon code, but we have everything right away (I am all about instant gratification). Anyone want to buy the Hi-Val CD-Recorder?

11/15/01 Update-Ok, the CD-Rewriter has been sold-Thanks!!

My "grand total" invoice amount is $199, and I'm getting a $50 rebate. Had to pay $10 tax in the above figure. Not sure why since officemax isn't in vermont, maybe it won't actually get billed to me.

The xp pro upgrade sells for around $130+ on ebay, so if you don't need the xp, you could sell it for the "net amount" and keep the scanner, webcam, and, most importantly, cdrw for free. Or you can sell the hardware for about that amount and keep the XP for free.

I wasn't that interested in XP at first, but for "free" (sorta) I might. One nice feature is that it lets you easily run programs in their own operating system/video setting mode, so if you have an older window program that only wants to run at 640X480, 256 colors, win95, you can do that. I have a lot of such programs in my collection of software.

to be honest, i'm not sure what the actual code (if that's what it was) is. I clicked on a link somewhere, similar to the links above.

try using your fave search engine and look for "officemax coupons" or "officemax $60 coupon" and you should find it.

Wish I could help you more, but I honestly cant remember how I got there. I visit a LOT of sites on a weekly basis, and i was in a big rush to cash in on the XP madness this week.

By the way, except for compusa/bestbuy instore deals, from what I can see, staples and officemax have the best xp deals, by far. other sites offer free memory or shipping, and that's about it.

PS - or just use the $50 off coupon above. Might not be worth the search just to save an extra $10. Or maybe someone else will find the link. I've got to go home and help with the kids (we've got 8 of them), and its "birthday season"...3 birthdays in two weeks. We're baking cakes on a regular basis these days!

If the offer doesn't show up then you need to close your browser and clear officemax cookies and then retry.

Very nice deal -- I just did it.

Now I know what people are getting for Christmas (scanner, camera...)

Thanks for the tip!
