The laws in my state recently changed. We now need to keep children under 80# in a booster seat ( I just gave mine away )

8 years old or 80 lbs how frustrating is that alot of boosters are only rated for 40lbs thanx for the tip

8 years old! That's crazy... IMO a first grade child is way to big for a booster seat.
And by the way. My DD is 10 years old and only weighs 50 lbs.
She will probably be almost ready for high school by the time she makes it to 80 lbs.

You need to do some research, there is very good reason the laws are changing on this , many children have been killed because they come out of seatbelts during accidents. I know everyone feels "inconvenienced" by this , but it may save your childs life, whats that worth?

At the risk of sounding infuriated that I would dare compromise my childs safety......Thanks, but, no thanks to the articles. I never said that I did not want to place my child into a carseat, I just do not like being told what to do with my child. I am ALWAYS concerned with the welfare of my children above anything else. To suggest that I need articles to teach me about child safety is quite a bit presumptive on your part.

You sound like a responsible parent, as am I, but for every one of us there is probably 10 more that do need told what to do.
This is a very serious matter.

See, I thought I knew this too, and so did a friend of the family when she put her 5 year old in a basic lap belt in the back seat. He was an average sized kid. They got into an accident hitting a telephone pole at about 45 mph. Her son appeared fine, but ended up dying of internal bleeding from massive internal injuries due to the belt riding up over his stomach - which they all do on smaller children. A shoulder belt would have done just as much harm, since they don't fit properly on children either - going across their necks.

As parents, we DON'T know everything. It's our job to keeps our ears and eyes open for potential dangers to our children. Just like product recalls. You may not know an item is dangerous to your child unless someone puts it out there for you. Would you then continue to give the potentially dangerous item to you child?

I don't want to be the parent on the news bawling saying "I didn't know".

So I'm glad they're passing new laws and getting the word out about Booster Seat safety. Because once you hear about it, you can no longer say you didn't know when something, God Forbid, happens to your child because you ignored the warnings.

Maybe it's inconvenient, and maybe your kid will complain every time they have to use a Booster, but the inconvenience is worth keeping my kids safe. I'd rather hear daily complaining then never getting a chance to hear them complain again.

Just to set the record straight. I had my 6 year old daughter in a car seat until a few months ago. Then they changed the law. I totally agree with car seats, I am an advocate for the use of them. I just did not feel the need to keep an 8 year old in a car seat. It is my opinion...thats all. I do not intend to keep my daughter out of one. I did research, and I bought the best one I could afford. BTW>..my PEDIATRICIAN said I could finally take her out of one. Hope that sets your minds at ease, my daughter is safe. I still believe an 8 year old is to big to be put in a baby seat.
I believe a seat belt does the job just fine.
As for articles... I'm sure I could find articles on the internet... where people would have survived, had they not had on a seat belt. Articles mean nothing. They are only someone's opinion.
You have your opinion and I have mine.
I don't intend to try to change any laws... just because I think everyone should be forced to obey my opinion,and I don't think anyone else should either.

I don't see you can say the "government" is telling you how to take care of your children. Most of these laws were passed after citizens (such as the lady in the story) lobbied for them. Maybe you should lobby against them if you feel it is wrong.
Children need to be protected , be it car seats, immunizations, schooling.....or other laws.
Yes , there are a lot of kooky laws out there. but I see nothing wrong with this one.
If these laws weren't in place , do you know how many kids and infants would be riding around unrestrained. I still see people do this anyway.
The laws vary in each state but most of the recent ones are children up to 8yrs or 80lbs , whichever comes first , so if they are not 80lbs by their 8th birthday they do not have to be in a booster, so technically , you'ld be putting your 7yr old in one.

Just remember there are lots of kids these days that need protected even if you are a good parent , I think the good parents are outnumbered.
