I got a Dell Dimension XPS T700MHz Pentium 3 a coupla months ago and I LOVE it! I highly recommend Dell.

One thing I would suggest: definitely get at least 128 MB of RAM, no matter what you do. And don't get the 733 MHz Pentium 3 with the MDRAM--it has a buggy processor.

1. Figure out how much your budget is, and stick to it!!
2. Unless you are a serious gamer, or have specific needs (like a software developer etc..), most brand name computers are pretty much the same. So definitely go back to basics and compare features vs price. Meaning if comparing computer A vs computer B if they have like features buy the least expensive one, IGNORE the brand names.
3. Sacrifice on processor speed, and get as big a monitor as you can afford, and as much memory (128 is a good number) as you can afford. Again unless you has specific needs most processors out there are good enough for anything you'd want to do.
4. If you are NOT comfortable with computer stuff, and are buying from a REPUTABLE dealer (Dell, Gateway, ESTABLISHED local computer shop etc..) buy the extended "on site" warranty. Most computers break in the first 90 days, but if you aren't comfortable "under the hood" its well worth the cost!
5. Buy a UPS (not a surge suppressor!!) with the computer. Bad power kills more computer then anything!!

hope these tidbits help...
