Brendabutt, thank you for agreeing to help with this project! I personally will be collecting them year-round, most likely saving the ones collected over the summer until school begins again in the fall. To give folks a little background, my son started kindergarten in August and being the get-involved-in-my-kids-education type of Mommy that I am, I started working on ways to earn money for the school (the President of the PTO told me she wants me to volunteer for some fundraising "stuff" - surprise, surprise - hee hee. Personally, I`m looking to head up a parent`s safety committee to address safety/violence related issues at the school...can you tell I`ve become a firm believer in the writings of Gavin deBecker?!?! But that`s another story). Anyway, one of the things my son`s elementary school is doing to raise money is to save the "Box Tops for Education" logos from General Mills products. The General Mills Box Tops for Education are each worth 10 cents and are found on such General Mills products as: Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Total, Fruit by the Foot, Fruit Roll-ups, Fruit Gushers, Dunkaroos, Yoplait yogurt multipacks, Potato Buds, Suddenly Salad, Bisquick, Yoplait Go-Gurt yogurt, Bac-os, Supermoist cake mix, Betty Crocker frosting, Betty Crocker supreme brownies, Betty Crocker supreme dessert bars, Betty Crocker potato side dishes, Lloyd`s barbeque buckets, Hamburger Helper, Chicken Helper, and Tuna Helper. Last year`s efforts generated over $900 for the school; the goal for the 2001-2002 school year is $1100. If anyone (who isn`t already saving these logos for their own children/grandchildren) is interested in saving these for me, please send me an email at [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] (or post a reply). I`d be willing to reimburse folks for postage on getting the logos to me (I`m guestimating that one could fit quite a few logos into a single standard envelope). I`m having trouble getting pictures of the logo in this message, so please check out this website to see the logos I am requesting folks save for my son`s school. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] The logos do have an expiration date on them. So as you clip the logos from the various General Mills packages, please check to make sure the expiration date is far enough in advance that when I receive them from you they will still be valid. I am assuming that General Mills sets these expiration dates far enough into the future so that folks can collect them for the entire school year and turn them in at the end of the school year and still get credit for them. I also created a flyer that I distributed around my neighborhood to get neighbors to participate as well. I suspect that a lot of folks would save these if they only knew how valuable they are to their local schools. But I guess if you don't have children/grand children in school, one may not think to save them. In one of my posts on another chat forum it was brought to my attention that some schools host a "friendly competition" between class rooms to see which class or which individual child can collect the most box tops. The "winning" class room or individual child is then awarded a special prize. I can see how posting a request such as mine could give someone's child/classroom an advantage in collecting the most box tops or Campbell's soup labels or whatever folks may be collecting to raise money. The principal at my son's school does not like the idea of competition between class rooms for things like box tops, so having a "winner" in terms of the class collecting the most box tops is not an issue in this case. I have even received a few notes from folks willing to sell box tops to me for a price (example: 250 for $25.00). I declined, saying posts like this one are a way to "recruit" folks to save them for me (or their local school) for free (I am however, willilng to reimburse the cost of postage). Somehow the idea of flat out buying them from someone just isn't as fun - where's the challenge, the thrill of the hunt in finding new recruits? Hee Hee... Thanks again for your help and support! |

people want to sell them to you? how pathetic can you get? it's a shame people can't show some measly "goodwill" towards someone with such a worthy cause. i'm a h.s. teacher and i have my students bring them to school so we can send them to the local elementary schools. this semester we gathered over 600 boxtops. they really seem to enjoy helping out. it doesn't take them but a lousy TWO SECONDS to tear out a boxtop. good luck with your venture. i hope that your child's school reaches its goal. |

I emailed you that I would be happy to save these for you, but I'm not sure the email went through. I'll just start collecting them and you can let me know where to send them. Don't worry about postage reimbursement - it's for a good cause.

Thanks to everyone for replying! I would be interested to hear more about other fund raising activities that your PTA/PTO is involved in - I`m always on the look out for new ideas for raising money to bring up for discussion at PTO meetings. One program I started at my son`s preschool was a plastic grocery bag recycling program - families collect clean plastic grocery bags from participating stores, send them to a company called Enviro-Bag, who recycles the bags into garbage bags which are then stocked on the shelves of the participating stores. The schools can earn up to $1.00 per pound of clean plastic bags. I am in the process of getting the program started at my son`s elementary school. If you think your school PTO might be interested in this fund raising activity, check out website [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] It`s a great way to teach the kids about recycling and earning money for the school at the same time. Another great fund raiser is the Scrip program, whereby you pre-buy gift certificates and participating merchants donate a percentage of the face value of the gift certificate to the school. If you are not familiar with this program, please check out website [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] The beauty of this fund raiser is that it does not cost the parents any additional monies - you use your existing shopping habits, and with a little pre-planning, can earn money for your school without spending extra dollars. K-Mart stores recently started a "school spirit" card program where a certain percentage of your purchases are donated to the school of your choice. It isn't a credit card type program - when you sign up you indicate your school of choice, then you receive a card and everytime you make purchases at K-mart, you show them the card and it keeps a tally of your total purchases. I don't know if Gordon Food Service stores are nation wide - they are a bulk food supplier here in Michigan. You sign up for a "fun funds" card and, like the K-Mart school spirit card, a percentage of your purchase of "fun funds foods" (foods specifically marked for inclusion in the fun funds program) gets donated to the school of your choice. |

Andee1, thanks for the info on the Campbell's soup labels. My son's school does not participate in this program, but I did find a cyber friend who is Vice President of her daughter's PTO and they are trying to collect 2000 labels by February to purchase a new microwave for the kid's lunchroom. So I am saving them for her.

My daughters school also sold Entertainment cards. Eight different local businesses had eight coupons for buy one get one free (papa johns, burger king, dominos, taco bell, plus they had the local skate rink, bowling, video rentals.) The cards are good for 1 year and were worth over $400, the price for each card was $15. I dont know if this company is just for NC area or not but this is the number they have on our card.. Pinnacle Promotions, Inc. (866)669-2324 it is a toll free number.

You may want to check this site also........ [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] I have been saving the box tops for my kids school for a couple of years and have found this is another way to add to that. Also Amazon.com is listed here as a 3% donation and they do not usually do incentive programs so I always use this site as a gateway to them. Your son is very lucky to have a MOM who is so involved. Best of Luck with all of the programs!

| quick question
You are talking about the box top education things that you can find on any type of box. Because i opened my pantry and i have about 5 or 6 boxes with them on there. I would be willing to pull them off and mail to you for no charge. I am a college student and am willing to help out anyone when it comes to their children because hopefully someday when i am married and have children there will be people out there that is willing to help me do the same. So Sally if you need them, just let me know. My email is [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] Tandi |

Tandi, please check your email. Thank you so much for helping me with this project! If anyone currently saving these box tops for your local community's school would like a copy of the flyer I created, please send me an email ([Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]). I'd be more than happy to send it to you. It is a Word document that outlines the Box Tops for Education program and how folks can get involved in helping support their local schools. With a few minor modifications you could use it to "recruit" your friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. |
