I was in a similar situation with the birth of my babies. Breast feeding not only protects your infant from disease, its convenient and provides optimal health benefits for his future along with being free! A few months from now, making your own baby food is not only economical, it is healthier! I used canned/frozen veggies if fresh was not available and bought one of those electric mini choppers (<$20) to puree it. Find less elaborate ones at your local Walmart/K-Mart. I also received assistance through the WIC program. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Books to aid your research can usually be obtained through your local library for free reading [Only registered and activated users can see links. Yes! Have your cousin apply for WIC if she hasn't already. WIC is for Women, Infants and Children and they cover the cost of nutritious food/baby formula for low to moderate income families. Have her check it out at her local Health Department. I saved thousands for my twins. WIC is a Godsend!

Breastfeeding is a wonderful way to save money. She could also try going to local Goodwill or thrift stores for clothes and toys. She maight also want to buy store brand diaper instead of the premium brands (Pampers, Huggies, Luvs). Most brands work just as good as their expensive counterparts!

Thank you, for all the great ideas. She has applied for WIC and some other assistance as well. She went to several 2nd hand stores this week and bought a few items as well. She will be breastfeeding as long as she can. Let me know if you have any other ideas. Thanks in advance! Happy Holidays.

Well, you may not like this answer but in the long run cloth diapers are cheaper. If she has her own washer/dryer, she might consider them. I still remember those days of plastic pants and all. What a joy to have to carry a stinky one home. LOL

I dont know where you live but here in WA we have big lots and a factory 2 u store and you can get tons of baby stuff for really cheap, last time I was there, they had pooh crib sets (comforter bumber pad I think a sheet for like 12$ which is really cheap I wish I had seen that before I bought my pooh set would have saved me over 150$ and like onesies packs for like 3 or 4 so thats like a buck a piece and when they do clearance you get one heck of a deal. I was able to get 3 and 4 piece outfits that had the jcpenny tag still on them for 10 a piece reg prices were between 50-60 I made some money on ebay. I'm trying to think how else I've saved, OH buy diapers in BULK at like costco same with wipes or you can make your own I know theres a recipe somewhere on the net I ran into one time. If I think of anymore I will let you know. Mom to a 6mo old |

Go to Publix Grocery Stores. You can sign up for their baby club and get great deals and coupons. They will mail you coupons to get free diapers, wipes, pacifiers, etc. You get about $30 worth of baby stuff free. After that they send you coupons to get money off these items. |

| shop consignment stores
As a mother of 2 children I can't begin to tell you how much money I saved on clothing by going to consignment stores and the goodwill!! People get rid of REALLY nice things and this is the perfect place to get NICE name brands and hardly worn clothes for CHEAP!! Yard sales are also good for this. I try to buy a season in advance (just buy a size bigger) and I save ALOT of money!! Also, when there is a clearance and things are marked down to almost nothing get a bigger size!! Kids grow fast and they WILL grow into them!! Also...I know from working in a pediatricians office that they get samples of formulas so have her ask her doctor for some sample cans. That would help out. They get FULL size cans and even some in bottles. This is also a good tip when the baby is sick because they always have pedialyte samples and other medicines so tell her to not be afraid to tell the doc she can't afford much and they should be willing to help. Good Luck!!
