I got the internal one,and it doesn't work with my computer!!! It had a DVD player, and I'm just not willing to give that up for a burner!!! Thanks again!!! |

I have an external CD-R drive and it works great! Mine is reconditioned, but you can buy one new at Buy.com: There is a $30 rebate right now, that expires 9-29-01, making the final price $148.95. Oh! And there's a coupon good through August 12th for $15 off a $150 purchase (be sure to click through DOD's link: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Are you sure you can't use an internal one at all? granted, one model may not work, but maybe you just need to try another? The reason I ask is that the HP external above is only a 2X burner - it will take 30 minutes to make a cd. For the same money you can get an internal 12X burner or so - make a cd in 5 minutes. If you do want an external, at least try for a 4X, which will cut your time in half. |

I wish I could!!! My computer has a DVD and that takes up where the burner would go,thanks for the tip though,I never would have known that!!! |

Make sure you can't fit another drive in. A lot of computers have an empty bay that is merely covered by a faceplate...remove the face plate, insert new drive, and voila`. Most computers allow for 2 "full size" (i.e., dvd drive, cdrom drive, etc ) drives, so you should be able to have the dvd drive and cd burner. If you look at the front of your computer, see if there are any spaces that look suspiciously like they would fit a new drive. Or, take off the cover and look inside and see if you see a metal cage, like the one holding your dvd drive, that would also fit the burner. If you currently have a cdrom drive and dvd, you can always replace the cdrom drive with the burner. |

Loox like millervt pretty much covered the internal thing, except to say that they do make internal cd-burners that are also dvd players. Although, these are a lot more expensive than buying them separeately. I recently got a Philips cd-rw internal burner and it worx great. Internals are cheaper per speed too, and typically have less errors. Most of them come with basic directions for installing the hardware. The only problem I had installing mine was that my cables weren't long enough and I had to get a y-adapter to extend mine... but that's just my Etower. They aren't that hard to set up... usually cd-rom/r/rw are SCSI based, if you're running a mac, its all automatic, if you're running a PC, you need to install the device drivers for it, but other than that, it should do everything auto... the IDE port you connect it to already has an IRQ set up for it, just install the software that came with it. You don't really need to go from a CDR to a CDRW, unless buy more expensive cdrw cd's, the cdrw cd's will start to corrupt after a few times of re-writing...
