Thanks for your offer of help. I have a very low budget, of about $600 or so. I am willing to combine all sorts of rebates, coupons, sales, what-have-you. I am not too particular about processor speed... anything above 400MHz should be okay, I guess. I am only looking for a CDROM drive, preferably CDRW, though I won't mind a DVD at this price :-) (you never know, there may be good sale somewhere). I am borrowing my friend's monitor at this time, but might need one later. Any peripherals like speakers, mic etc. are welcome. Thanks, - Donna.

Ok-I have a general idea as to what you are looking at. Do you prefer a intel processor or amd procesor or don't care? How would you classify your skill level regarding computers? Depending on where you live-could become a factor in deciding which deal to go for-i.e. sales tax versus shipping costs. Here are some web sites that might help narrow the search [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] [Only registered and activated users can see links. After you have a better idea of processor type and speed I think we can narrow the choices down. Check out ZDNET which has numerous articles that might help you.

I couldn't find the difference between intel and amd processors... so I guess I don't care at this time. I am an expert *user* of computers till now. I go to different offices, and work on whatever PC that is offered to me. Never bothered to find-out what makes them tick. This would be my first purchase for home use of PC. Till now, I was making do with a PC I borrowed from my friend, which she needs back now. Its a slowwwwwww machine with 2GB hard disk (50MB free), a pentium and unkown speed. No sound card, no speakers, 1 floppy drive, 1 CDROM drive, Windows 95 OS and one broken port (don't ask me if its serial or parallel). Now, I need to upgrade to something with USB ports, to run my camcorder and Handspring Visor. sound card, speaker and mic for PC-to-phone or PC-to-PC calls and lot of memory to download all sorts of softwares I keep "needing". A lot of RAM to open several applications at a time. I just thought I'd buy something that has a sound card, speaker, mic 20 GB hard disk and 128 or 256 MB RAM. Looks like I need to do more research :-( Why can't things be simple? Uh, yes, I'm in CA, so 8% sales tax. Maybe I could buy from some non-tax state like Texas or something.... But then, I may run into problems with the PC and have a tough time shipping the PC back and forth... - Donna.

Donna-Wondering if you had a chance to look thru the sites? Many of the lower end systems come with 32 or 64 mg of memory. It doesn't sound like you have ever opened a case up-the reason I ask is that if you would feel comfortable putting in a memory module yourself or if you would prefer to avoid this. Does your $600 budget include a monitor? In my opinion the most cost effective is to purchase your monitor separate from the rest of system from a seller which allows pickups-This takes more effort and legwork. Some of these monitors are refurbished, used or new. You can decide on what monitor to purchase later since it sounded like you are borrowing your friends monitor. But you will need to decide on 14,15,17 inch monitor.
