I used to have free DSL w/winfire till they went out of bussiness recently. There's no way i'm going back to dial up. I would just like to hear your experience with one of the alternatives, and any advices you may have. Basically i'm looking for the best service possible in the area.

Right now I'm looking to get road runner, previosly owned by media one, now bought by AT&T...I already have digital advantage plan w/them, so concidering i buy the modem, it should give me $10 savings or $30 a month. I don't know much about cable modems, so any info on where to get the best deal, and how they compare would be greatly appreciated.

I understand dsl prices start at around $40 or more around here. I already have the modem..does that give any discount?

Anyone who's well informed, particulary in northeast region, in mass, feel free to post your sugestions.

I also used to know a website you could go and compare prices for dsl providers, but can't remember now it when comes useful, figures...

Any info you may have would be very helpful, thanks in advance...

Cable

I have what your talking about RoadRunner which used to be mediaone, I love mine, let me give u some insight on what I know..First off for a few more weeks they have 3 months for 24.95 a month, another point is what they don't tell u..It will cost you 50.00 for an Ethernet card..I bought my own for 20.00 install it myself not a problem, may I suggest renting their modem, from personal experience and a few friends, we bought a cable modem...it lasted about 5 months to the tune of almost 299.00..warranty 90 days..If u rent theirs it costs an a few bucks more, BUT if it ever dies, you get another free of charge, and I think the only place to get cable modems that mediaone will use is circuit city..You need to know the "magic" word, now for our area, I'm in MA, Its the V word..You tell them that V emailed u and gave u a killer deal, but u want to see what they can offer u first? I promise u at&t will meet or exceed anything..they want your business...Stan feel free to email me if u need any other questions about cable..Downtime is almost NEVER...Best customer service ever..and I have the whole package and save tons..its 99.00 for cable tv and internet

I bought a cable modem over 2 years ago and had no trouble with it at all. They only cost 99.00 plus another 20 for the card and it runs 29.99 a month. Mine gets a workout too since I rarely turn my computer off, its usually running something online at all times. I have it though optimum online, The only place to get the modem is the Wiz or right from optimum. I don't know if they still have the promotion running but they had it where if you spend 100.00 on anything at the wiz you get the cable modem free.

I have mediaone/ ATT in Chicago Area, and its wonderful! Weve had it now for 2 1/2 years. I guess Im spoiled, because I will never go back to dial up. Wherever we move has to be cable modem access....Good Luck!

Thanks for the feedback guys. After concidering my options i've decided to go with cable. I have a yearly contract with my satellite provider so the combined package is not an option for me, besides there some things I'd never give up. I figured I'll give modem a try with my long awaited GC from MyPoints for Circuit City. I'll be going to local Comp USA to get the card. Is there a particular brand that i need? Where did you guys purhase yours? As you can see I'm a rookie in the area. Thanks again for your help.

RoadRunner

Go with Roadrunne. My friend saw on a newsgroup that if you buy your own cable modem, you get a better deal per month. Time Warner will not confirm or deny that fact.
