Hi I need help finding my little sister a Prom Dress. This is very important to her as she has always had a weight problem. She has lost several pounds and is now about a size 12 (she is 5'10"). I want her to feel really good about her self at this prom and told her I would buy her dress for her. I can only spend about $200 maybe a little more but thought some of you might know of some deals going on. I checked Saks and they did not have anything she liked (or at least that was in our price range that she liked). Thanks in advance for any help.

I might be able to help. I dont know how long you have till her prom but here are places that my sisters(3 of them) and I bought all of our formal dresses. Dillard always has great discount on prom dresses in junior, Davids bridal sells prom dresses they are a little more than Dillards cause there never on sale for very much off. JCpennys has a lot of there dresses regular price under 200 and they are very pretty so if you found one on sale you would still have the money to have it altered to fit or add some shoes.

I have a really neat dress I was going to sell on ebay, if you want me to send a picture I can, I've only worn it once then outgrew it bust wise if she's any more than a 34B in the bust though I doubt it will fit, it's a very mice dress tho, kinda looks like a zumzum dress with a ball gown bottom....anyway another place you might want to look is JCPenny, they had some beautiful dresses for New Years that they are still getting rid of, both online and in the stores....also, you're probably gonna think I'm nuts but Frederick's of Hollywood puts out some beautiful dresses for prom and they usually run about $120.....of course I would give you my dress for $25 plus shipping, but hey LOLhope you find a pretty one for your sis! |

Thanks SamanthaRoth. We have not checked Davids Bridal (I bought my wedding Dress there four years ago). Her Prom is April 13th (that is Friday the 13th kind of an odd day to plan your prom I thought)so we have some time.

For JCPenney you might have to go to the Talls catalog. My daughter is 5-11 1/2 and had a hard time finding something long enough (in the store)- which you probably thought about already...A bridal shop could help alot on that front. Don't rule out consignment shops. Think of the number of dresses that are worn only once!!

Thanks for the ideas. My sister is twelve years younger than me and has always been "my little baby". I was at the age where I loved babies when she was born. I moved out and went to college when she was in first grade so I only got her for the fun times (and the bad ones when she was fighting with mom and thought the world was going to end). When I married and moved away from home she started coming and spending at least a month with me every summer. I taught her to drive and we do all the fun stuff when I get to see her. She is going through some really tough stuff right now at home and with her boy friend. I am trying to give her the confidence to hang in there so she can come live with me (and my family) and go to college. I went through the same things as a teenage that she has and is going through and do not want her to make some of the choices I made. She seems to listen to me because I do not lecture her but tell her what I did and the outcome when I was where she is now. I try not to tell her what to do. I am doing it because I wish I had had someone to do it for me and I love her like she really was "my little baby" Thanks everyone for the help. I'll let you know what we find. this is almost like being a teenager again myself.

well I went and pulled the dress out of the closet and it was a 9/10, I thought it was bigger than that, it was a Zum Zum tho so if anybody else needs a formal I have this dress it is blue and black, I had bought it for the opera. I also have a short white halter style cocktail dress in a 5/6. Ahhhh, to be a 5/6 again! LOL I'll sell that one for $10. OH!! Sarah!! another good site is [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] they have beautiful dresses and I'd say about half of them are under $200...... I think it's great what you are doing. My lil sis is only 2 years younger than me, but she's so immature in a lot of ways. I'm trying to get her to move in with me also. She's living with an AWOL Marine at the moment. Everyone pray for her! |

SapphireStacy My sisters boy friend just joined the Navy and she wants to marry him. My husband just got out of the millitary after nine years. It is a rough life! a POOR life! and I want her to see more of the world first. I keep telling her that if he is the one he will be there in a few years. I met my husband over ten years ago and was a teenager then 9well if 18 is a teenager). She keeps saying you knew he was the one BUT I only got married four years ago this year. I went to college, did the friends thing, dated other people and just lived a little before we got married. So maybe they will both get everything straight. Oh by the way not to worry you but to help put a little pressure on her (if you think she needs that)let her know she can get in a lot of trouble for not letting the MPs know where he is if she knows he is AWOL more so with the Marines than anyone (My dad is a retired Marine).

I hope you are still reading these posts.....Your sister sounds like me. Although, I am a few years older than your sister. I too am 5'10 and I struggle with my weight. Not only that, but about the boyfriend thing. I met my ex-husband when I was 17. Got married at 20 and he left me 8 months later. Of course, I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, but I hope that she can wait. I know soooo much more now, eventhough I thought I knew everything then!! If she does decide to marry...I wish her lots of luck. Marriage is hard enough, but being a military wife is even tougher. She is very lucky to have such a supportive, loving sister as you.

to address the MP issue, not to worry, I have already contacted them myself and even gave them the address and they didn't do a thing about it, there must be some kind of time restriction or something I guess. The guy is a real loser, has run 3 of my sis' vehicles into the ground, he had no insurance and was taking her vehicle while she walked to work last winter. Half the time he doesn't work. He has totally alienated her and all her friends, she isn't allowed to have anyone but him and he pouts for days if she goes anywhere without him. My whole family can't stand him...his own family can't stand him. anyhoo, about the prom dress!! I was just going to recommend DEB also; they have great dresses cheap!! I have gotten evening dresses for under $20 off their sale racks and they have cute shoes and hair thingy mabobs and purses for prom too. they even have stuff like those feather boas at ours for the prom glamour girls LOL DEB is here in VA and I'm not sure where else, bcause I go to the mall in Maryland also and they don't have one there. So you might want to look it up on yahoo and see where there is one close to you. Even if it's a couple hours away it's worth the trip, so make an outing out of it I go 45 minutes to get to my DEB because they are the only ones with my size in evening dresses that don't look to grammaish and are cheap.

mommy2makayla I am still reading the post Thanks to everyone for all their help. I think we have a good start now. I thought about telling her stories about how most of the time it does not work out but then I thought because she is so much like me that would just make her more determined! So I decided to tell her all about college life all the fun things I did that she would miss out on. Tell her about how things change once you marry, you still love the person but there are changes that come as your love grows. I really think she might be getting the picture. Of course we really do not have to worry about it until she is through with school as there is no way my dad would ever allow it before then. This guy has already cheated on her and I know he will again. She told me there just are not enough boys at her school so I told her to wait until she got into UT! SapphireStacyMps are SLOWWW. One of my best friends is still an MP in the Air Force so I can say that, lol. They do have to go through a lot of paper work and even then they may wait until some higher up get on a power trip, that is just how things work. But you did the right thing. I hope things get better in her life, I really do. I can not stand to hear stories of women that do not see the bad situations they are in and do not understand that they really could do better. Love is blind. As far as DEB I am in Texas and we have them some places here, My sister is in Alabama so we were searching online and I going to see her the week after next to take her shopping. We do not have DEBs there I know that for sure. We do have JCPennys and Dillards (although I hate shopping at the latter because everyone is sooo stuck up). Thanks for all the suggestions. I figure if I do find something I think she may like here at DEB I can email her a picture. If worse comes to worse as long as they will take it back I can return it if it does not fit right before the prom. I know some places do not allow you to return things like formals. Thanks again to everyone. I have gotten great freebies, wonderful deals, lots of help, and great advice from this board. There really are some wonderful people here!
