Hi there, i know that right now netzero and bluelight is limiting people with # of hours to surf online. You might want to try american express online, it free ONLY to its card members, just to to american express and search free isp, and the link will prompt up....after u download it, they will ask for your card# to proceed further. the best thing about this is that IT HAS NO BANNER AT ALL. IT WILL NOT DISCONNECT, IT GO FASTER THAN NETZERO AND ITS FREE....its really worth it to use ae online. =) takkie |

I have found Juno ISP to be fast with local dial up numbers throughout the US.

Here is an idea to save on you're internet service provider charges. I am going to place it elsewhere, but i think it will fit best here. In my area, the price for keeping a phone line is twenty dollars. If you have two phone lines, one for your computer, and one for regular use, you're paying $40 plus change (maybe even more if you have call waiting or something else). If you're also paying for you're internet service, something like aol, for $20.00 a month, then you together you are probably paying $60 a month to be online. Phone line 1 $20.00 (min/month) Phone line 2 $20.00 (min/month) ISP 3 $5-20.00 ______________Total $60.00 (a month) I recently switched to a DSL service (direct subscriber link). And now pay only $50.00 a month for everything. When you sign up for DSL, you only NEED one phone line, so you save money by disconnecting the extra line for you're computer. You can talk on it at the same time you're online. The DSL service uses a higher bandwitdth modem, so you're phone connection doesn't interfere with you're internet connection. The total price of the DSL service is only $50 (with SPRINT) right now. I think they are still offering free installation and the Free DSL modem that you need to use the service. Besides being cheaper (by about $10.00 a month) the service is also MUCH MUCH faster. Its about 20 times faster than a 56K modem. The $50.00 dollars includes You're internet service and the phone line...which you can use at the same time you are online. They only thing not covered in this service is the network card on you're computer. A network card (ethernet card) is about $20, but MANY computers come with them. If the service is available in you're area I would definitely look into getting it. Its much faster, and could save you money. ![]() p.s. ,,, DSL is instant on, so you don't have to wait for the modem to "dial up", you just double click on you're on the net. Give it a try. I actually use a cable modem myself which is also "always on" and I pay $39.95/mo unlimited for that high speed service. It's another alternative to a second phone line and then paying for Internet access on top of that.

| thanks
Thanks for everyone's help. I have been considering cable access. I do not have a second phone line at this time, but do need one. So, cable would be a good way to go if I can talk DH into it. I pay $20 a month for dial-up, plus he pays another $20 a month for another dial-up server. Kind of silly. Amex sounds really great, but I would have to get their card 1st. I don't have that one yet. Its sounds like the best free service out there. Again, thanks. Now I just need to start hinting about these ideas before Valentines Day to my DH.

Wow--never heard of American Express online service. I downloaded the software last night. Much better than NetZero. Amex does have "pop-up" ads (they're hard to describe--there is an AMEX icon on your desktop and the ads "pop out" of the icon--you can move the icon to a corner so the ads are unobstrusive). I did have difficulty registering, but called the free tech support and they walked me through the error resolution--very professional! Maybe this should be moved to "Found a Freebie!" |

Another advantage of amex, besides the free internet access - if you apply for their blue card (no fee), there is a way to not have the card number be used on the internet without a card reader device that attaches to your pc (available free). In other words, if you want peace of mind, and always order from home, you can use this card/reader combo and not have to worry about your card number being hacked and used. At least according to their web site, which I would assume is accurate. Read more about it there if interested, i'm applying this weekend. My non-amex card was one of the ones hacked by the ring in moscow. Finally got their $5 charge reversed, was a nuisance. Had to delete my old card, get a new one, etc.

Dotnow.com is still unlimited and free but the banner is huge and their software freezes up some browsers. There are some ways to get around the banner with a little work and looking around the web.
