need help finding book based on spin-off from magnum pi movie

Hi everyone. Happy T-day in advance.

Several months ago there was a Magnum PI spin-off movie that was about 1 1/2 to 2 hours long that aired on t.v. Of course Tom Selleck starred Basically in the movie he plays an alcoholic sherriff and is very devoted to his dog. He lives in an isolated cottage out on a lake I think.

My husband said that there were supposed to be more of these movies created based upon some author's series of books.

Does anyone know the author and book that the 1st movie was based upon?

SPIN-OFFs
There were a couple of attempts to "spin-off" series from Magnum. The most notable was writer/director/producer Bellisario's attempt to set up Erin Gray (Buck Rogers) as private eye JOY "DIGGER" DOYLE,the lady eye who usually got the better of Magnum, in her own series. She appeared in two episodes of Magnum, "J. "Digger" Doyle" (April 9, 1981) and ... which served as pilots, as Nobody took the bait. An attempt to spin off the William Lucking character in "Two Birds of A Feather" also stiffed.
