Don't forget to ask for a free upgrade at the counter even if you have used a coupon. I always reserve the econo-box and have been upgraded for free the last four times I've asked.

In Ireland, where everyone drives a manual transmission, the price of an automatic is almost double. When I was there last month I asked for an automatic as a free upgrade and I got it. Total was 280$ with insurance and all taxes and fees for an 11 day rental. This was a wonderful deal, considering the dollar is very weak against the Euro right now and everything is expensive.

Moral of the story: It never hurts to ask.

I found an off airport rental company and got a compact Suzuki Esteem for 9 days for $207. I can upgrade to a Nissan Sentra for $30 more. The cheapest I found for the companys in the airport was about $250 for a compact Dodge Neon.
