Big grin Best place for used college books?

HELP! Books at $159 new, would love to find them cheaper! Any sites you know of besides the obvious EBAY?

Amazon is the place I would check. My DH sold many of his textbooks on there.

I, too, recommend Amazon.com ... Now, if you prefer getting a "new" book, go to Booksamillion.com. They have a "preferred shopper" card for $5 and it gets you 10% off ALL purchases, including college textbooks.

My wife and I are both attending grad school and have really enjoyed our BAM experience They get books out quicker than B & N and Amazon.com.

If you do purchase your books at booksamillion.com be sure to clickthrough ebates or another shopping portal to get even more back

Thanks guys! Yeah, I think Amazon is a great place. I am awaiting an email from a seller now with an answer about a book there he has. Also, I do have a BAN card and we love it! So, if I end up buying new, in which the accounting ones look as if I am going to have to, I will buy through them. Also, half.com has an abundance of textbooks too I have learned!

Thanks again,
Jan

Be careful, to my knowledge the BAN card does NOT apply to college textbooks. That's why we went with BAMM instead, plus the card is only $5. Isn't BAN's $25 or so?

Hi,

I would also suggest Half.com and Amazon.

Yesterday, I bought 5 books for the upcoming semester from half.com. The books cost me roughly $70 with shipping and had I went to the bookstore I would have paid at least $140 even if I had gotten them all used.

I bought some at Half.com, but I'll also tell you another trick I learned that helped make my books free during graduate school.

CHECK THEM OUT OF THE LIBRARY!

Generally people are not requesting text books, so you can keep renewing these over & over. I saved a ton of money on books while in graduate school.

Also - another tip, there are lots of editions of a book, look for the 2nd most recent edition and it is going to be loads cheaper. So, if it's an 8th edition, buy the 7th edition used. Books get updated, but generally not with enough stuff that make it so you miss out on anything by having an older edition.

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks.....

for the original question and all of the responses. I would have never thought of buying textbooks other than from school. With 2 kids in college, your tips will save me quite a bit.

Mr. Thrifty,

I actually meant Books A Million as that is what we have here locally. But I beleive our card was $10 and we save 10%, even at the coffee bar there.

I loved the idea about the library too! I will check into that. Because as it seems, DH's books are going to be closer to $300 new, one is accounting stuff that is $160 alone. And those we just can't seem to even find used or new anywhere except for the college book store itself. Still scratching my head over that one!

Thanks a bunch guys!
Jan

I agree on the library thing. I got two textbooks through interlibrary loan that would have cost me $100. Your librarian is your best friend! Half.com has been wonderful for me both buying and selling. I am in an accelerated program and some of my classes are only 3 weeks long...who wants to pay full price??

My son started class this week. One of his professors told the class to go to bigwords.com to get their books. If you plug in the book info, it searches different sites and will list the costs of the books (shipping costs also) of each site, so you can get the overall best deal. It includes used books, but there is an option to search only new books if you choose.
