Rule #1: Stay on the Strip. No matter what. Trust me on this.

Rule #2: Don't drink if you are playing $$ games. Only drink when you are watching. They will offer you unlimited drinks at the table games. Vegas didn't build those grand casinos with pennies.

Rule #3: Don't go to Vegas on a weekend. Go during the week preferably Monday thru Thursday.

Check out this website. It is awesome!

I talked to my SIL who lived in Vegas for several years. She said unless you just WANT to pay more for a room, off-strip is fine. She said it was mostly tourists on the strip...locals and regulars stay off of it. She also said most of the criminal activity happens on the strip...criminals prey on tourists. They don't much mess with the locals and regulars.

There are some strangers down on Fremont and off-strip, but they are mostly harmless...just folks wanting a cheaper way to have a good time.

But it's whatever you feel comfortable with. I never had any problems going down there, and actually won more on Fremont than I did on the strip.

Don't go cheap on the buffets.
I found the more expensive ones to be SO much better.
(at the Rio they have a seafood buffet that is $30 a person, but it was to die for.)
And heck... how often are you going to be in Vegas.
That is one area to splurge on.

Fremont street is pretty scummy. We walked past some dude smoking marijuana right out in the open there.

And a lot of the hotels are full of people selling time shares who tell you that they will give you free tickets to shows. You have to just ignore them or tell them that you are leaving later that day so they will leave you alone.

At the Mirage they have a cool Dolphin habitat and small gardens with some cool animals. Very cheap entertainment and it was fun.

Have a good time and if i think of something else I will post again.

Well-I assume you already have your airline tickets?

If you like to go to numerous locations-think about renting a car.
Or you can use the Trolley $1.65 exact change. I think it stops
running at 1 a.m. The Bus that runs on the strip is $2-here's a
tip-sit in the back(much cooler).

Try to eat during off hours say Lunch at 2-3 p.m and Dinner
at 8-9 p.m.

If you are looking for a low priced show that is good-I enjoyed
the one over at Stratosphere Tower-can take trolley or bus.
The trolley drops you off right in front. The tip here is that they
hand special coupons for the show in that if you buy a drink for
something like $7-8 bucks you get the show included. Instead
of paying $13-14 bucks without the coupon. If you hand $1-2
to the person before they start to seat you-you'll have a good
chance of getting a table right in front. Show times are 2 & 4
p.m.-so it's a good thing to do during the afternoon. The show
is a mixture of show girls, magician(parrot), darn can't remember
the cute little dog in the tuxedo, singer, Big John (the grill is
funny !).

If you gamble at a place you might want to get a players card.
The fancier places don't cater to much to the nickel players, but
you can find some. I personally like the middle area of the strip
such as Circus-Circus, Westward Ho, Riveria(nickel mania).
The cafe in Riveria & Westward Ho are both good. Inside
Stratosphere they have a place that has a real good spaghetti-
they have old time pictures of las vegas celeb's.

Not sure if you have booked your rooms-this is a tough one-
because everyone can be so different as to what they like or
prefer-if you are looking at price imperial palace, riveria, stardust,
sahara. I've always founs/shows/

separate. Weekends are more expensive then weekdays.
You should be able to snag a room for $40-$50 per night.
The rooms at Riveria & Sahara are nice.

Go to the Tropicana, the afternoon show, I think the show was around 1 or 2PM, Rick Thomas is the magician's name, a great show for the money, and cheap to do. I think I paid around $16.00 a ticket. If you want to sit in the front it's around $23.00. He has his Bengal tiger on stage with him. You can buy the video afterwards and meet him in person which I did. Also, the Tropicana has great free entertainment in the middle of their casino, plus outside you get a free pull on a one armed bandit, something like that, to win prizes to shows etc. I thought it was the best place on the Strip considering I had to stretch my money.

Also go to the "Secret Garden", around $10.00 to get in, you get to see all the animals used in the Siegfried and Roy shows. It's at the Mirage hotel/casino in the back, and there is a free dolphin show also included. The Secret Garden is only open on certain days, 'til around 3:30 only, best to go early, but call ahead first to see which days they're open. You won't be disappointed.

Go to the downtown area, "Freemont street", ask which bus takes you there from the South Strip, then take a cab back. It's a FREE overhead light show, starts around 8PM every half hour I believe, think it goes to about midnight, totally awesome show, there's also free live entertainment there, some gift shops, casinos are all lit up, really pretty.

The "Rio" casino has a live show called Masquerade in the Sky, it's FREE, there's a free shuttle bus that takes you there from Harrahs. Where the limos park and the taxis are, you bear right, walk around the corner to find the bus. That is a great show! There are dancers and floats which are lit up, floating above your head by the ceiling. You won't want to miss this. Take a cab back to the strip, it won't cost you much to do that.

At night, don't miss the volcano that explodes outside of the "Mirage", well...you really can't miss it. It's not something you'll see back home that's for sure. It's free too.

If you want to splurge just a little, take a gondola ride inside the Venetian hotel and vithe "Secret Garden", around $10.00 to get in, you get to see all the animals used in the Siegfried and Roy shows. If you want to splurge just a little, take a gondola ride inside the Venetian hotel and view the free entertainment in the square adjacent to the boats.

Go up in the tower at the Stratosphere casino, it's worth it and doesn't cost a mint to do. You can see all of Vegas, the mountains, it's quite beautiful. It'll take your breathe away. I went up in the tower twice. Then buy the picture they take of you when you come down, they superimpose your photo onto a nighttime scene of Vegas. It's a wonderful souvenir.

Bellagio has some huge fountains that rise and fall to music. Free to see.

It keeps duplicating everything I put, so I'll put the rest of the stuff on Vegas here.

There is an early afternoon Vegas show at the Stratosphere casino, I believe it is called Viva Las Vegas, it doesn't cost much and I really thought it was good, plus you get to see showgirls on stage. Be sure and bring your camera, you can have your picture taken with the showgirls after the show and buy a T-shirt if you like, with the showgirl's photos on it. Of course, I had left my camera back at the hotel. Now I'll know for next time. It really would have been cool to have a photo of me standing next to Vegas showgirls. Oh well, maybe next time we go.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to a show called Bottoms Up. It is absolutely disgusting, in bad taste, a horrible show. I bought the video to show my husband how bad it was. He agreed. I'm surprised it's still in Vegas. It wasn't even worth paying a penny to see, a real bomb.

Thank you to everyone who posted ideas and web sites. I really appreciate all of the effort. In my seniltiy, I forgot to mention that we were lucky enough to have the following happen:
1) My boyfriends dad bought our airfare
2) We have a free apartment to stay in about a mile from the strip. We can not cook there, but we do not have the cost of a hotel.
I have never even thought of going to Vegas and had no idea what to do. Planning this at last minute also meant not being able to save money to go. Hoever, the offer was there and he wanted to go visit his dad since he has not seen him in 12 years.
A huge THANKS for the terrific ideas. My boyfriend was amazed at what you can find out on this freindly website.LOL

I never even would have considered going to Las Vegas, except for the fact my DH had to go there on business back in February, so I decided to tag along. Glad I did, it was fun. I'm not a gambler, but there were plenty of shows to keep me busy, and just seeing those multi-million dollar hotels/casinos was an awesome site. You'll have lots of fun there.

I agree with whats been said. Basically, there is a humongous difference between a midweek with no conventions in town, vs a weekend with conventions. Those are the 2 extremes of room prices. National Airlines is owned by the casinos, they actually loose money on flights to get you into Vegas (they make money off you if you gamble). If National flies out of your town, they're usually cheapest. The San Remo is a decent cheap hotel just a couple blocks off the strip. Circus Circus is usually the cheapest on the Strip. I was a travel agent for 3 years. Vegas hotel prices wildly fluctuate more than any other tourist area in the world, hands down. From minute to minute, second to second. If you find a good deal on a Vegas hotel, grab it. Those cheesy books on racks at the airport and hotel lobby actually have good coupons. Liberace Museum is awesome, Silver Dollar City has good acts like Willie Nelson. A photo of mobster Bugsy Siegel still hangs in a corner of the Hiltons lobby. Mormons and the mob formed an unholy alliance to build up Vegas, its wierd. Don't bring it up though, it'll tick off the locals. The bookstores have good books about it. If you eat too much at the buffets, hike it off at nearby Mt Charleston.

I almost forgot, there is a million dollar bill on display at Binions Horseshoe Casino, and an awesome classic car collection at the Imperial!

Sorry, this thread does not belong in the Chit Chat forum, we have a forum for these, so I have moved it to the correct place, titled "Help Me Find a Deal!"

Re: las vegas on a budget

I just got married a few months ago in vegas, *preplanned for a year*- OMG I Miss it already, but at least i have pics!!!

I am sure I am just repeating what everyone else here already put, but just about every hotel there had a free show- and we saw them all. I recommend going to the RIO to see the show in the sky- definitely entertaining , and downtown was pretty cool and super cheap too. I stayed at Treasure Island, absolutely fantastic show!
The Botanical Garden inside of the Bellagio was pretty, and of course the fountain show, especially if they do it with the fog. Paris is right across the street, and was pretty awesome too

Bring comfortable shoes!!!!!!!! Seriously. I never been there before, and my feet were swollen and ached for days!! Things are not as close as they appear. heh.

And check out the Deuce, When i went, it was 5 bucks all day (Its good for exactly 24 hours so if you took it at 5pm you can use it until 5pm the next day, which totally rocks!!!) It takes you from one end of the strip to the other.

The Buffet at Monte Carlo was relatively cheap, and if you want trinkets to take home with you, stop in at CVS or Walgreens on the strip, towards NYNY *if memory serves me right* . They are across from one another.

The place was overwhelming for me and my husband, but we loved every minute we spent there and cant wait to go back!!!

Have fun.

If you are just looking for best price on strip although the North Strip-I would say Sahara, Stratosphere, Circus Circus(more kids), Riv. Also consider the Luxor. Look around on other forums.

I did a quick look-so you will have to search around more-all depends on what place you are interested in & what kind of price you are looking for.
I saw Circus Circus for $52 night thru orbitz, $46 thru gocheap.com at Sahara. Sahara you can take the Bus on the strip to go downtown/strip.
The trolley no longer stops at Sahara. Also go directly to hotel websites.

That should keep you busy
