My daughters birthday is coming up and for a craft project i was going to have the kids decorate a pillow case with permanant markers. well, i cant find cases for under $5!!!! I know a few years ago i bought pillow covers, have the zippers instead of a loose opening, for about $2 but now they are $4 or $5. I need about 14 cases after all is said and done. anyone have any great ideas???? thanks karen

You're just looking for solid white pillow cases? Why not just sew some up... all they are is two rectangular pieces of fabric sewn together on three sides and hemmed with a wide hem on the fourth. I could probably make them in about 15 or 20 minutes each, once I got going. And they wouldn't take much fabric at all... Actually, if you're interested, maybe I could make some for you (though I haven't done pillowcases before, I have done shirts and wrap pants for renaissance festivals, and am just finishing an outfit for my daughter, so a pillow case should be comparitively easy). -Dyllan |

Thanks dyllan, i have thought about sewing them myself but in measuring a regular case i figured i would need about a yard of material for each one and material costs $2 a yard at joanns plus the time of cutting each one and then sewing, i have 3 kids so i dont sew that often. i have found a place where you buy them by the dozen and they come out to $2.20 a case with shipping so i might do that and then if i need more than 12 i can make the others or splurge and buy some ![]() thanks for the suggestion. karen __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. Price per sewn pillowcase might be cheaper if you can find some inexpensive flat sheets. I always try to use sheets for sewing pillows, curtains, valances, etc. before I price fabric. Of course, your time and effort may still be worth more than that! __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. I thought about sheets but i figured i would need one sheet for each pillow case??? maybe i wouldnt though. i would need to measure them. if i could find queen or king size sheets for $3 i could probably get at least 2 out of each. hmmmmmm. need to make a decision soon as her party is in a little over a week.

If you really want to make the pillow cases they are not that hard. I just finished making some for my girls to match there curtains. I just used the left over fabric from the sheets that I used to make the curtins. A pillow case is really only 19 inches wide and 31 inches long. So if you cut the fabric at 20 inches wide and 64 inches long, you will be able to get 5 pillow cases out of a twin sheet. Becaues twin sheets are 68 by 100. All I do is make a two inch hem on each end. They fold the fabric in half and sew the two sides together. Thats it. I use a tight zig zag to go back over the edges so they won't fray. I really want a seger maybe santa will bring me one. I have forund that Kmart and walmart have the cheepest sheets. I hape this helped you out. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | ok, i fold:)
you all win, i will head back to walmart this afternoon and pick up some sheets. i know i saw some for $3, dont know what size. but i will pick some up and do the sewing. I'm not very good at serging or zigzag stitching for that matter so i may just double stitch to keep it tight. will let you all know how it comes out. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. Sheets for $3... that seems cheap. Might be worth buying to make wrap pants out of. That is if I ever get around to making them again... they didn't sell as well as I'd hoped on eBay. -Dyllan __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. ok, i went to walmart today and picked up some of the sheets. luckily i had writtenn down the size of pillow cases so i could figure out that these sheets are a little smaller and i would need an extra sheet. so i cut one up today, makes 4 cases, i then sewed one of them and it looks decent. the edges i left alone at the openning so all i had to do was sew two straight lines even i can manage that, well, almost but they will pass for what they are needed for the girls are going to decorate them with permanant markers so it really doesnt matter if they look perfect. thanks for talking me into this ![]() karen - the happy sewer ![]() __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links.
