Rolling eyes Reception Favors...any soap makers?

Okay...as many of you remember I got married in March, and we're finally having a reception in September (mostly the in-laws idea, since I think a little too much time has passed, but what the heck). Anyways, since I'm from NC and my hubby is from NJ I came up with the idea of getting NC and NJ soap molds, and making soap for our guests as favors. We are having a tropical themed party, so originally I thought of tropical type molds, but this seems more personal. I plan on giving each couple, or individual a NC and a NJ soap wrapped in tulle. The thing is, I've never made soap, nor do I know anyone who has. How hard is this going to be (let me know before I buy the molds)? Also, I've been looking at the white glycerine melt and pour soap, it seems to be the easiest, but I'm not sure. Which ones work best? What are your experiences? Does it generally turn out looking nice? How easy is it to color and add fragrance? Am I going to be spending mucho cash, or is this do-able? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

At my daughter's slumber party, we made soaps. We used the glycerine type. It was a clear, rosy tan color. It was very easy. I just melted it in a glass measuring cup in the microwave, added some soap scent, poured it into the molds, and also put in some cinnamon sticks. You can also put in little trinkets, or pieces of other glycerine soaps (make sure soap in mold has cooled a bit first, or the pieces will melt) to add color. We let them set overnight and popped them out of the molds the next day. They turned out great, and my daughter and her friends loved them. We got all our supplies at Hobby Lobby, and the leftover glycerine soap packets that I didn't use, we returned for a refund.
Good luck!

They're really really easy to make - we did this with a group of 8 year olds and we had no problems. The glycerine is so easy to work with & adding individual items wasn't hard even for the clutsiest kid.

One suggestion - why not get some little gold bands, one for each of the soaps? You could get a large bag of them cheap from a party supply place, and you could just leave the soaps clear then. I think it would be incredibly cute & remind them of what the soaps were from.

Thanks Brenda and Kat I'm glad to hear it is easy, I need all the help I can get! Kat...I NEVER even thought of that. You mean, put the bands inside of the soap??? That is a wonderful idea!!! I might even be able to lightly tint the soap like a really light blue or something, light enough to still see the bands. THANK YOU!!!

I don't know if I'd tint the soap. We had 14 kids in the group that did the soap project & some of the best looking soaps were the ones that one set of girls did. They left the soaps clear, mixed in metallic glitter and put a fake jewel in the middle of each.

I thought that maybe a gold glitter & a band in each soap would fit. The bands could just be the little toy ones - they're usually really cheap.

I'm a member of several moms and women's networking groups, there are ladies who make soaps, if you are interested in ordering some, or some special offers, let me know by email and I'll get their info and links for you!
