Talking Most career books are ludicrous

I read some career books at Borders the other day, they all talk about "networking", and how bad it is to use the help wanted or internet job listings. Well, I sold business to business on straight commision before, and I did good at it, so I know this networking horse crap is full of it. These books make it sound like it sooo easy to get through to business owners, then you're supposed to say some bs how you're not looking for a job, but want an "informational interview" to ask about careers in that field?? The average business man would slam the phone in your ear. They make it sound like you can NEVER talk to the secretary, half the time she does the hiring anyway, the owner is too busy to talk.
All these books are such bs, I'm SO glad I didn't follow them. Call or walk into places you want to work, STRAIGHT UP say "are you hiring", make a contact, thats the way to do it. And theres sometimes jobs in the help wanteds, just don't rely on it solely.Monitor it, see which companies are hiring. And DON"T spend decades polishing your resume, just make a decent one. My brothers said its a red flag if a dudes resume is TOO good, and his interview answers are too polished or scripted, he thinks twice.
The most ludicrous book has a picture of parachute on it, its virtually unreadable, it densely packed with garbage, line drawings, cutesy touchy feely sayings. Dudes, I'm a newager, I like cutesy feely, but when it comes to jobs, throw away these books, crank out a decent resume, pound the pavement, buy all the newspapers, hit up the internet big time, ask around everyone you know. Forget they're networking and interview scripts!!!!

Plus, don't forget about following through after your interviews are over. If you don't hear from them, call them in a week or so to tell them you are still interested in the position. That's what I did, and that's how I got my job.

My BIL got a job, just by walking in a place. He showed them a book of his work, his makes pastries. They liked it, he asked if they were hiring, and they gave him a job. He is no longer at that job, found a better one in an upscale place, better location, even more hours if he wants them.
