Question healthy food choices??

In a couple weeks i am going away with dh, brothers, sisters and parents to a fancy hotel. breakfast and dinner are included. I am trying to eat healthier these days, watch calories, lower fat, more fruit, exercise more, etc but i must admit i am clueless when it comes to choosing "healthy" foods when i eat out. Now i know salad foods, like tuna, egg, shrimp, etc arent great becuase of the extra mayo. but i really dont know healthy choices for breakfast and dinner at a fancy hotel. anyone want to give me some simply pointers to go with??? please keep it simple, i dont analyze things well so telling me to think about the original source and seeing what is closest to that doesnt really help me much

thanks for your help.

karen - looking forward to 2 nights without kids

cata5 is welcome here
Suggestions:

I think I would avoid fried foods, sauces, butter,...things like that. Fruit is great at breakfast. If you want toast/french toast order without butter or on the side. Maybe an omelet with some veggies on the inside? skip the cheese...and skip the hash browns...maybe substitute something else? Oatmeal is good, but kind of boring. Toast is better than a bagel...No sausage or bacon... NO caramel rolls or muffins!

Dinner: Order salad with the dressing on the side. Skip extras like sour cream and butter on baked potatoes.

If they have a buffet, just look at things that don't seem greasy or sugary. Take small portions...a couple of bites of something you want to try...don't waste a nice trip out by eating lettuce the whole time .

If you're ordering from the menu there might be a section of healthy choices. They also might have half entrees though a fancy restaurant might not. Grilled foods are usually good choices with steamed veggies... Skip dessert and drinks. Or skip something to have something else...you don't have to eliminate ALL the bad stuff!

My ultimate suggestion is that a couple of meals won't sabotage your efforts. Enjoy yourself!

I agree with Cata's choices.

*Also, watch the portions.
If you have meat, make sure to eat a size about as large as your fist. Veggies & Fruit I always consider a *free* food. Eat plenty of those.

here's the healthiest stuff available at better hotels, for each meal. The more upscale hotels usually actually have quite healthy foods available these days. Breakfast, asparagus or brocolli omelette, with fruit plate. Avoid the sweet rolls, pastries, excessive coffee. Lunch and dinner, caeser salad, fish and veggies. Make sure to get in the quality proteins and greens. stash some unsalted nuts, fruits, and a couple protein bars in your suitcase as a backup. If everybody else orders desert, you don't want to feel out of place, order the fresh fruit plate, berries with cream, or sorbet, instead of brownies, ice cream etc. True sorbet is basically crushed frozen fruit with little extra sugar, and good hotels do it that way. Good luck

rafala, you got plenty of good advice from those who've posted. (except for DaizyMae, LOL) I particularly like this bit of advice:

be sure to treat yourself if you feel like it, so you won't feel deprived. I gotta be honest. If I go out to dinner with people, my "normal" eating habits go out the window. I don't do it often, so I think it's ok.

Yeppers...got some great advice already babe. Also..stay away from battered foods..not meaning ran over with a car battered! LOL! Fish is a good choice un-battered of course...chicken breast, skinless. Have a wonderful time and I agree, do not deny yourself a little of the "sinful" stuff either.

Cantalope or oatmeal for breakfast. For dinner, eliminate the gravy, it's bad for you. Any kind of squash is good, healthy for you. For dessert, fruit like red grapes, strawberries. Pass up the whipped cream on the strawberries. Chicken is OK, hamburger can be fatty. Stay away from all fried foods! Stick with broiled foods, boiled foods are also OK.

Love thanks

lots of great help here, like i expected anything different I am not going to deny myself at all, in fact if everyone gets dessert i will probably get a chocolate one at least one night will try to remember not to go for fried, although it has more taste and the large fist sizing for meat, i always forget that one. i have started putting dressing on the side and then dipping my fork in and then picking up the salad, really helps cut down on the amount of dressing.

i will let you know how i do when i get back

karen
