Angry The future of my hometown, Hershey, PA

I've been a member here for a few years, and although I've not posted in a long time (simply because I don't spend much time online anymore), I like to check into DOD and see what's going on. I know too that when anyone asks for help, people from DOD are always around and ready to help out in whatever way they can. Right now my hometown can use all the support it can get. And I know there's more than a handful of chocolate lovers here

Recently there was a decision made by the Hershey Trust Company to look into selling Hershey Chocolate. I was born and raised in Hershey, still live here, and both sets of grandparents worked for Mr. Hershey himself. I also put in 18 years at Reese's, so I know personally how it is to work in a factory every day and physically earn your paycheck. For those that haven't grown up here it's difficult to explain how the morale, the spirit, and the history of Hershey is connected to the factory. Everyone here has or had a relative that works there, many have generations of family working there( like my own family). The blood, sweat and tears of the workers made the chocolate factory what it is today. When Milton Hershey realized his wealth he had from the factory, he established the Milton Hershey School for Orphans. And years after the school was established, he THEN established the Hershey Trust to manage the school and it's investments. right now, the Hershey Trust is in control of 51% of Hershey Chocolate and if they so choose, can sell it right out from under the town. The Trust is in charge of 5 BILLION dollars for the school, but their reason for the proposed sale is it's what's best for the school and the town in the long run. Of that 5 billion dollars, they hold in trust, they spend nothing. all the money they need for the school and it's upkeep and development is drawn from the interest and not the principal 5 billion. They claim that they can earn another 10 BILLION for the Trust. WHY? They don't even need to touch the principal 5 billion to begin with!
Milton Hershey started his factory in the middle of nowhere; 12 miles from Lebanon Pa, and 14 miles from Harrisburg in the middle of dairy country. He had the factory built, made it possible for many of his workers to own their own homes, built a recreational park for his employees that is now known as HersheyPark, built an arena, a stadium, and countless other amenities to keep his employees happy and able to work. During the depression Milton Hershey provided jobs, by having these places built, and by building the Hotel Hershey as well. During the depression my maternal grandfather died, leaving my grandmother to raise my mother and her 2 sisters alone. She went to work in the chocolate Kiss department at the factory and supported her three daughters and herself on that salary. My mother was a registered nurse for over 50 years and both my aunts were also professional women.
Did you know that the Hershey Trust board is made up of 17 men and women? Did you know that of those 17 people, only seven live in Pennsylvania, and of those seven, four live locally? And of those local four, NONE actually live in Hershey? These are the people that will decide the fate of OUR town, not THEIR town.

Please visit the site posted below, read the information, leave a message, check out the links, anything you can do to make your opinion heard will be of enormous help to those of us who live here. Pass along the info and the link, post it other places, anywhere and everywhere you think will help get the message out to the country. Don't let the Trust let down Chocolate Town, USA!

I'm so sorry to hear of the trouble going on in your town!!! Progress is something that eventually hits everywhere, but it doesn't seem to care who it steps on along the way to get there. This is very scary to me, concidering how much I just LOVE chocolate...I will check out the link you gave in more detail a little later today...something has to be done to keep Hershey where it belongs, AND to whom it belongs to.....I hope everything turns out ok...

I actually just got back from vacation there!!! I know and understand how you must feel about this...I was actually shocked to hear about it whlie I was there. I stayed in MT. Joy on a working farm and the owners were very upset about the whole thing. They also told me how Hersey purchased Dutch Wonderland.....still can't figure that one out. Corporate America is getting more greedy by the day

I thought it was so cute how the bushes were trimmed and even the streetlights (if I remember right) were all so unique and *Hershey* themed.

Unfortunately, it's business to them and nothing personal.
Changes stink sometimes but I guess it's their choice.

Thanks to all!

Thank you all for your support. The website is getting a good amount of hits these past few days, mostly from supporters all over the country and a pal or two from across the world

As for the Dutch Wonderland purchase, that was made by Hershey Entertainment and Resort Company (HERCO), the same company that owns and operates the park. Hershey Chocolate is the candy and confectionary division of Hershey Foods; they also own Chocolate World. As for the bushes in the shape of H-e-r-s-h-e-y C-o-c-o-a? They're (mostly) the original shrubs Milton Hershey had planted there when the factory was completed in 1935. And about the streetlamps? They're my favorites If you ever come back to town or see photos of Chocolate Avenue, if you take notice on one side of the street will be an unwrapped Kiss lamp, and directly across the street from it will be a wrapped Kiss lamp And yes, for those of you who've never been here, the air does smell like chocolate, and when you get a whiff of the roasting almonds, it smells like brownies!!! Keep driving down Chocolate Avenue and you'll smell peanut butter and roasted peanuts coming from the Reese plant too I'm telling you, it's **** on a chocoholic!

At any rate, thanks again for your kind words and anything you can do to help. It is much appreciated and needed and God bless you all!!

Good luck to all of those crossing their fingers!!

Here's the link directly to the online petition, but everyone should really look around the site to see all of the info and facts given.

Thanks for listing the names of the board members Mouse; I wasn't sure if I should do it or not, didn't know if it would be appropriate to list it all here. By the way, I'm Italianlady, not Airslady. Thanks for the support anyway!

When I made my reply this afternoon the petition wasn't yet up and running; I was told it would be there by this evening. You got there to post the link before I did! Thanks again to everyone!

Nah, you're not a doofus at all...just a busy freebie hunter. I just wanted to make sure you knew who was where and posting what on here

Thanks to everyone for their support! I wish I could afford to send everyone five pounds of fresh chocolate right from the factory!

What is the latest on your town's predicament? I just heard on our local news in Dallas that there is a sale of Hershey to Nestle's pending, but someone has temporarily stopped the sale. Hope it's not more bad news. My mom and dad's families are from PA, and I've heard much talk of Hershey over the years.

Unhappy

We just went to Allentown PA on a glass buying trip and stopped in Hershey for the afternoon. Its a lovely little town with a great history. I hate to hear of American companies not supporting the Americans that helped make them. I know, its big business and the bottom line is the only one to count but it just isn't right. I collect Tom Clark gnomes and heard online that they were going to be made overseas instead of being American made. I emailed them but they haven't answered yet. When they are made overseas, I will not buy them. The companies leaving USA is really sad.
