| I just watched some special on one of those nighttime news shows. They had parents allow their child(ren) to play out in the front yard and this psychologist drove by and asked the children to help him find his dog. He had a picture and asked them to look at it and asked them if they'd seen the dog. The parents watched anxiously from inside the house. Something like 9 out of 10 kids (all told not to talk to strangers) ran straight up to this man's car. The psychologist said that often, kids don't quite understand what a stranger is. If asked to draw a stranger, they draw unshaven men with scarred faces and patches over an eye and such. The nice man driving by isn't a stranger to them. He said that as young as 5, you should start sharing scenarios with your children. Tell them things strangers might say to get them to come to them. Then tell them how to handle it. (Turn and run into the house and find a parent.) Younger children should be told not to talk to anyone they don't know and should be supervised when outside. If in doubt, I would think that it would be a good idea to try this experiment yourself. Have a friend your child hasn't met try to enlist their help. See what your child does. It may scare your child, but it will give you a good opportunity to explain to them what can happen and hopefully to prevent it from happening in real life. This was truly a scary segment. Especially in light of all these abductions. Jackie

| There was a four year old girl with the last name of Farley, I believe who was kidnaped and eventually murdered in Orange Texas about a month or two ago. No national media attention was given to this case. Katie Couric didn't open the Today Show with updates everyday, there were no press calling for police press conferences, and no bulletins outside the general Houston area. There was no National day of prayer dedicated to this little girl. This terrible occurrence happened during the same period as the other kidnaping cases. Right there in the thick of things. I cannot think of any legitimate reason Miss Farley's case didn't get national attention. A small girl kidnaped from her home by a non relative should of received the same attention the other cases received. It didn't. Miss Farley was found dead two weeks after she was reported missing. Katie didn't, Peter Jennings didn't, Geraldo didn't, not even MSNBC reported the story. Why, I don't know. The only factors that were different from the other cases were Miss Farley was poor, and Miss Farley was Black. |
