Thumbs down

I went to K-mart yesterday and first the flowers with Martha Stewart on them are so overpriced, a 4 inch regular old petunia for $2.99! But everything at our kmart is shriveled and so dry.

Are flowers that bad everywhere or just at ours?

I think with most Martha Stewart stuff, you are paying for the name. I always go to her site and adore everything in her catalogue, but the prices are completely outrageous. I'm not surprised that flowers with her name on them were so expensive!

Being a bit of a gardener, I have learned something interesting. There are only two places on this island to get healthy, bug-free (which is important in a screened in balcony- white fly infestation is the WORST) plants- make the hour drive to Home Depot on Fridays (the day the plants arrive) or go to the grocery store!

Once I bought a bag of potting soil at the local nursery, and several plants to plant in a window box. We planted the box, and put it outside on an 8th story balcony. Two weeks later we noticed a long, thick worm on the ceiling of the balcony. We went out to see what was up, and found the whole porch was full of these worms, about 60 of them on EVERYTHING. The next door neighbor dropped by and said that the soil must have had the larve or eggs (or whatever the technical term is for pre-worms) and they hatched.

No more local nursery!

Blech.
