Unhappy WHO bass player John Entwistle Died

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - John Entwistle, the bass player for veteran British rock band The Who, died in Las Vegas on Thursday at age 57, just one day before the group was set to begin a North American tour in the city, officials said.

Entwistle, a bearded, taciturn type affectionately known as "Ox" or "Thunderfingers," died at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, said Clark County Coroner Ron Flud. An investigation was under way into the cause of death, he added.

The Who, known for such raw percussive hits as "My Generation," "Pinball Wizard" and "Won't Get Fooled Again," were scheduled to begin their three-month tour in a small club at the hotel.

With Entwistle's death, The Who are down to just two original members -- singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist-songwriter Pete Townshend. Original drummer Keith Moon died of an accidental pill overdose in 1978.

Unhappy

That's so sad, I remember John Entwistle, I grew up listening to The Who. I used to even have a crush on Keith Moon. Wow, not that old even, wonder what the cause was?

I think they said on the radio this morning it was a heart attack. They had just planned a concert tour too, and were supposed to be coming to the area in September.

Everything is on hold now, obviously. Thats so sad to hear of people so young passing suddenly like that.

A loss for the music world and for his friends and family. Truly one of the best bass players that ever lived.

:-(

So young and suddenly??!? Heck, he was 57 years old and had a heart condition! Add to that, a life-long rock-n-roll lifestyle. I figure he was about 5 years past his luck.

I'm sort of surprised that a fan of Boxcar Willie and Zamphir (Master of the pan flute) would even comment on this.

Mr. Entwhistle will be missed.

Laffing beyond hysterically @ pan flute!

But on a serious note, maybe StrikeFighter's (or anyone's for that matter) musical tastes are VERY broad. I know my mom loves The Who as much as The Kingston Trio. For real!

"Boxcar Willie, 1931-1999. ... Boxcar Willie, whose independently released recordings earned him 15 gold and 4 platinum albums, was 67 years old...."

Guess he died young from living that "boxcar" lifestyle.

For the record, I was not commenting on the musical talent (or lack of) of the recently departed Mr. Entwhistle. I was merely reeling to the supposition that he was both young and in good health, and that his demise came as a major surprise. I am sure he will be missed, most likely by those who knew him personally. And one could logically make the arguement that his contribution to mankind was neglible at best.

And while it should be no ones concern, my CD/MP3 collection contains neither Boxcar Willie nor Zamphir, Master of the Pan Flute.

And since I have the floor for the moment, I must add that Tmagent has a serious humor deficiency, if judged by her posts of late. But we should forgive her, owing to her residing in California. That would push anyone of us here right over the edge.

StrikeFighter18, didn't your mama ever tell you NOT to sit on your brain??

Sheesh... 57 is NOT old - not by a longshot. Well, maybe if you're 2 it seems old, but honestly it's not in today's world. John Entwistle had an incredible amount of talent - I'm so very sorry that your poor ears never had the chance to hear him play live so you didn't already know this.

Maybe you should go take a trip to California - it might do you some good...

No. THAT thought never crossed my mind.

But to be honest, back when you first started actively posting, I thought perhaps you could have been Provider. It crossed my mind and kept right on going too

RIP John. You and your gift to music will be missed. The good ones always do die young. And with modern medicine, anything under 75 these days is rather young, IMHO.

Alas, I have made the far journey to the left coast. I came away with the impression that its a beautiful land. Very diverse, both geographically and agriculturally. But I also got the feeling that God had somehow lifted up the country at its eastern edge and anything that was loose rolled to the far side. Almost every person I met [with the exception of the mangager of Mike's Bike Shop in Hanford, CA (but he may have been an 'import')] had some sort of mental tic-some slight, some severe. Such a shame, really. It was only through God's grace and mercy, I returned relatively unscathed back to Georgia, with, I might add, a much deeper appreciation for the land of my birth.

So, yes, Dear Kat, in retrospect, it really did me some good to that trip.
